Why the ReS-Food project The majority of both restaurants, hotels and charities confirmed that they have no policy for managing surplus food and donating it to those in need. In addition, they provide very little or no training to their employees. The project can help with this, as respondents felt that a system for managing and donating surplus food could be built into their existing business models. As it is a "food" bank, many people think donating food is the best way to help someone out. Although it does massively help, food banks can get more food for their money, buying in bulk and special orders. A donation of just $1 to a food bank can buy 2 meals, where as $1 worth of food can't even buy half a meal. I have 2 things for you to ponder: 1 - Last week I was helping welcome people to the Food Pantry for our Wednesday late afternoon/evening hours. In line were people who work in our community, coming after work to shop. I know this because they had uniforms and nametags from area businesses. Some had their kids with them, tired from a long day at school and/or day care. And everyone one of them depend on what is on these shelves to feed their families. 2 - Some of you might remember the panic you felt when you went to the grocery store early in the pandemic and found the thing that you needed unavailable. If you had to shop the food pantry and it was your only option because you were too short on cash from paying rent and all other life expenses to buy food and you got there and there wasn't much on the shelves - can you imagine the fear and panic? The good news is - that as a community - we can actually make it different. We can't change the dynamics that are causing people to need the pantry. (I don't have any tricks in my back pocket to change the economy, to change the housing shortage, to change the cost of day care or someone's income). But we can donate money to a food pantry or buy food to donate and fill shelves. That is in our collective power. I challenge you to to think of a way to make a difference today, and next week and the following week. Even if it's small, it will matter to someone. I have suffered with Endometriosis for many years now, and to be frank it sucks. It slows up my ability to function fully day to day, both physically and mentally. For the most part, I tend to keep it under wraps and tucked away from my professional life, just like many other woman who are also dealing with it. I was told that the team at Nu would be undertaking this challenge, after they had already secretly organised it…I'm looking at you Ian Howes, likely because they thought I would stop them doing it for me. I was touched that they were so committed to support me (love them), and the cause BUT I won’t be stopping them because this isn’t just about me. It is WAY bigger than that. As a condition Endometriosis is rarely talked about and diagnosis times are unacceptably high. I waited around 6 years to be diagnosed, by which time I was carrying around several large cysts on my ovaries, one the size of a tennis ball, despite raising Endo as a possibility during assessments more than once, as my mum also suffered from it. I have undergone major surgery and still the condition continues to grow, even as far as my diaphragm, meaning I have more surgery to come, with higher risks this time. Unfortunately, that’s a frustratingly common outcome, with the average diagnosis time being 8 years. Often by the time patients are offered help, the extent of the spread can be impossible to reverse. Endometriosis is debilitating, it is responsible for chronic pain and fatigue, depression and brain fog (very frustrating when you are trying to run a business!). It can also leave you with a difficulty/ inability to conceive, and yet is still not being taken as seriously as it deserves to be. Woman deserve more than this. Please donate and share if you can.
