This week on The Boomerang. My review of Rebecca Renner's stellar non-fiction debut, GATOR COUNTRY. "Gator Country takes seriously what Floridians already know, and few people outside the state understand, that living in Florida is living on the edge–of the swamp, of the North American continent, of life. For years, cases of human-wildlife conflict have plagued the communities living around Tsavo National Park, primarily due to high human populations and incompatible land use practices in the adjacent areas. Limited natural resources in the Tsavo ecosystem have led to the destruction of the once-thriving habitat, sparking conflicts between members of different conservancies and ranches as they compete for these essential resources. The struggle for access to water, grazing land, and other vital resources has escalated tensions, creating a challenging environment where cooperation gives way to discord making it hard for everyone to work together in the area. #climatechange #conservation #wildlife #TaitaTavetaWildlifeConservanciesAssociation(TTWCA) #Resources #ifaw https://lnkd.in/dhB5NKfQ

Cheers to Suncoast Waterkeeper for launching its Mangrove Ranger program to safeguard Florida's precious mangroves. Mangroves aren't just trees—they're lifelines for our coastlines, marine biodiversity, and our planet's health. They are critical nurseries for juvenile reef fish like tarpon and redfish, and for invertebrates like shrimp and clams. As sea levels rise and development increases, their protection is more crucial than ever. The Mangrove Ranger program empowers volunteers to monitor mangrove health and report violations, providing vital data for advocacy efforts. We all need to protect our mangroves for current and future generations! Read more about the program below. #mangroves, #ClimateAction, #water, #cleanwater --
Did you know that when a mangrove in the center of a mangrove forest dies from drowning, it's called a heart attack? 💔 Thankfully, a new volunteer program from Suncoast Waterkeeper is trying to prevent more of them from happening. https://hubs.li/Q02jnm-f0

The Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) is making $1.7 million available from its Preservation Trust Fund program and $175,000 from its Get Outdoors Fund for grants that protect open space for public use and other public benefits. Preservation Trust Fund grants for the spring 2024 grant round will prioritize projects that result in significant public access, but funds may also be used for projects that protect exceptional conservation values such as water quality, historic and cultural resources, wildlife habitat, and high-quality farmland and forestland. A real estate interest must either be acquired by a local government or conveyed to VOF to be eligible for funding, and protection must meet the requirements of Virginia’s Open-Space Land Act. Get Outdoors Fund grants may be used to fund projects that create, protect, expand, or enhance access to open space in underserved communities. Proposals up to $25,000 may be considered. Conservation is good for all.
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Today marks the 34th anniversary of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA). Since 1989, NAWCA has fueled waterfowl conservation across North America, uniting federal, state, and local governments and nonprofit organizations like DU with community groups in strategic partnership for the conservation of wetlands. How does it work? NAWCA provides challenge grants for wetlands conservation projects in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Every dollar of federal money allotted to NAWCA must be matched by a dollar or more from non-federal sources like DU or state fish and wildlife agencies. Because this program is so effective, funds are often doubled or tripled at the local level. In Washington, D.C., the #DucksUnlimited Government Affairs staff works with Congress in support of annual funding and the reauthorization of NAWCA to keep building on the Act's waterfowl conservation success. To date, NAWCA has helped fund more than 3,300 projects on almost 32 million acres in all 50 states, areas of Canada, and areas of Mexico. More than 6,800 partners, including private landowners, industry, and state governments, have worked together to conserve wildlife habitat through NAWCA grants. #DuckPolicy To find out more about #NAWCA and its success in your state, visit here: https://lnkd.in/ejFizDF2

BREAKING: Two new fire ant nests have been discovered in Meringandan West, north of Toowoomba. 🚨 We're running out of time to protect our native wildlife and communities from these tiny killers. If we're going to get eradication back on track, the state and federal governments must implement the recommendations from the recent senate inquiry into fire ants. We need ✅ more community outreach, education and advertising, ✅ increased fire ant checks and compliance and ✅ additional funding and resources.

Lady Liberty looks pretty good for her age, but the 200-year-old fort that serves as her base has seen better days. The cold and windy conditions in New York Harbor, combined with storms and sea water, are tough on structures, and Fort Wood is no exception. Currently, about 50,000 highly visible square feet of walking surface at the fort are in disrepair, meaning the site can't provide adequate accessibility for visitors. An investment from the Great American Outdoors Act will change that and make the site safer for its 3 million annual visitors. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. Join NPCA in urging Congress to keep investing in our national parks and extend GAOA by at least five more years! https://lnkd.in/ej6auypb #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #ProtectOurParks #ParkFunding #LadyLiberty #StatueOfLiberty #NewYork
