PUSHING THE ENVELOPE I would like to pile on the congratulations to the project team, but with a Building Science twist: Not only did they receive the 2024 MCA Choice Award, they also achieved a Whole Building Air Tightness test result of 0.015CFM50/SF!!! For a point of reference, the Phuis airtightness requirement is 0.060 CFM50/SF. - 285,000 square feet building footprint - 423,000 square feet exterior enclosure surface area If you want the equivalent value at 75pascals, the power law conversion would be 0.019CFM75/SF. If you’re stuck in your ways and want to turn this into a less sensible metric, the average building height of 34 feet would give you 0.04ACH50 Multipoint table and chart in the comments below. So many leadership gems to pay attention to from this principal. 1. He identified and centered his stakeholders. 2. He was intentional to engage those most negatively impacted by school safety issues. 3. He listened. 4. He activated the ideas and requests of his stakeholders. 5. He accepted help/assistance from student/ stakeholders. 6. He recognized the contributions of his stakeholders. Fantastic progress in the catering areas of our Transformation project

The findings of the final Grenfell Tower enquiry report makes for some harrowing reading. 72 people lost their lives in the tragedy, all of which were preventable. 1000’s of lives changed forever. Sons, mothers, daughters, fathers lost their lives. Children growing up without parents and grandparents. Parents lost children. The impact of these horrors will be felt for generations to come. As an industry, the recommendations will be welcomed. Licensing should not be limited to just the main contractors, it should be a prerequisite for any contractor who is involved in the process of working on buildings of multiple occupancy. Low rise, high rise and social housing. Clients, main contractors, architects, system designers, manufacturers and installers all have a responsibility to ensure that people can sleep soundly at night knowing that the building has been built to the best and safest standards. Independent fire officers have to play a key role and scrutinise every step of design, pre-contract to ensure that all crucial details are implemented. These recommendations should not be seen as red tape. They should be seen as the new standard that everyone in construction works to with the end result being safe, well built homes so that something like Grenfell, can never happen again. #grenfell #cladding #ewi #safecontractors

I've done some surface-level research and this project is much more fascinating than a mere paint company's new global headquarters may lead you to believe. Firstly, the project has already been underway for a number of years and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. So whatever "damage," or more likely inefficiency, has already been done.  There seems to be concerns about what is essentially gentrification, despite this particular project contracting a majority of workers from "minority or marginalized groups." However, Cleveland is a city that has a higher percentage of African Americans than the rest of the U.S. (47.4% according to the 2022 census). And so it could be the case that we should have higher standards in terms of racial equity, especially when dealing with a company as large as Sherwin Williams. Having 13.6% African American contractors (which is the percent of African Americans in the U.S. 2022 census) might look okay for other cities but in Cleveland, that would be a very questionable ratio and rife for suspicion. Especially so considering Cleveland has some of the largest racial wealth gaps. It's not just about the number of people you employ/contract of a certain race but about how you pay them and the opportunities they are provided, especially early on in life. I'm not 100% for affirmative action, although it may seem like it in this post. I believe region-based and socioeconomic factors are better tools for leveling the playing field (e.g. giving a scholarship specifically to kids from East Cleveland rather than anyone of a certain skin color or other programs like that). Anyway, this is a bit off topic from Sherwin Williams. I'm intrigued by what the outcome will be of this major new project on racial equality of opportunity as well as whether the city of Cleveland will see a positive net return on the considerable tax incentives they're giving to Sherwin Williams. https://lnkd.in/d6-dcBc4 https://lnkd.in/dygJPF76 It seems I have hit the word count ;-; In my next post, I'll be discussing a few of the things I'm really excited about relating to this project.
