We want to give a shout out to the participants in the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). For the past few National Organic Standards Board meetings, participants from the nearest TOPP regions have talked about their successes and challenges. Several NOSB members mentioned that they really appreciate this information and a chance to hear more about what’s happening on farms and with farmers who are interested in shifting to organic production. Staff from the organizations participating in TOPP met concurrently to the NOSB meeting, and we popped in for a moment and snapped a picture—what a delightful, and dedicated, group. Check below for a link to more information about TOPP—if you know a farmer who has been waffling about switching to organic agriculture or who could benefit from some technical help to solve a sticky problem, please let them know about this program. And, if you are a farmer with expertise to share, there are paid mentorships available. Our founder Bill Wolf said recently and in public comment that our ratio of US organic production to organic sales has got to increase dramatically. TOPP is one way to help make that happen, as are the market development grants from USDA (and the proposed standards for mushrooms and pet foods—comment by May 10). There are some hefty challenges, but if we work together, we can make a difference for farms, communities, and the health of the soil and the planet. #Organic #organicfarming #agriculture #climatesmart #sustainability #organicfood #organicfiber #petfood #mushrooms

@organicgrownco (OGC) was founded in 1978 by a group of gardeners, small-scale farmers, hippies and environmental activists with a shared vision to expand the availability of and demand for organic produce. Since their inception, OGC has become one of the Northwest’s largest independent distributors of fresh, organic produce. They’ve also prioritized progressive business models, most recently becoming a Sustainable Food & Agriculture Perpetual Purpose Trust in 2018. OGC’s Organic is the Answer campaign serves as an online hub providing science-supported facts and resources designed to help people navigate the complexities of food certifications and labeling. OGC was recently named Organic Company of the Year at “An Organic Night Out” hosted by The Organic Center and Organic Voices. This award recognizes the company which has done the most to advance interest, awareness, sales and support of certified organic products. The OOC is incredibly honored to have received one of the initial @usdagov @usda_ams Organic Market Development Grant awards and looks forward to working with amazing grant partners, including the Organically Grown Company, to promote Oregon and Washington organic supply chains. #organicmarketdevelopmentgrant #OMDG #OrganicTransitionInitiative #organicistheanswer #ChooseOrganic #orag #oregonagriculture #real #climatesmart #agriculture

This upward trend needs to continue! Here are some highlights based on the chart: • Total organic-certified land in the United States has trended upward since 2000, reaching 4.89 million acres in 2021. • Regional differences in organic agriculture have become less pronounced. Organic acreage and sales historically concentrated in the Pacific region (particularly in California) have expanded across the country, most recently to the Appalachia and Delta regions. • As organic agriculture grows, organic producers have experienced increased market access. Conventional grocery retailers have overtaken natural food stores as the most popular outlet for organic food, with 55.6 percent of sales in 2021. • Authorized Federal funds to support organic research through USDA projects have increased in the last two decades. Mandatory spending authorization for the Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative has grown from $3 million in 2002 to $50 million in 2023. We really hope to see that farms like White Oak Pastures will continue to inspire more farms to switch to organic pasture and rangeland. That's good for the soil, plants, animals and eventually all of us. #allorganiceverything #organicfood

OF&G (Organic Farmers & Growers CIC) has published a manifesto targeting policymakers, which sets out a framework for radical policy change based on the four principles of the organic food and farming movement – health, ecology, fairness, and care. OF&G’s chief executive, Roger Kerr says the future of food and farming is becoming a political hot potato. “The nation’s seen huge upheaval in the last eight years. A flawed food system has left the country at the tipping point of catastrophic environmental and human health crises. Decisive action cannot come soon enough. We need policies that create jobs, improve rural livelihoods while delivering sustainable and economically viable food and farming systems,” says Kerr. “Restoring this balance and equity requires ambition and vision from Government. The long-term effects of recent policies are still unfolding, but the need for action is urgent. One thing is clear; we must aspire to accomplish more.” OF&G says that by considering organic’s four founding principles, its manifesto identifies solutions that address the “huge disparity” that exists in current food and farming systems. Our Lead Scientist, Ryan Ponquett, is at the forefront of developing the flavour profiles behind every product category at Maltento 🔬 For those who may be unaware, the Maillard reaction (which occurs when reducing sugars react with amino acids under heat) is responsible for creating the savory flavors we know dogs love and enjoy. At Maltento, we use this scientific process on alternative protein sources, to craft dog food that is tasty, nutritious and far more environmentally friendly than any other product based on meat derivatives instead 🌱 The global pet feed industry is certainly gaining significant momentum as it turns towards greener alternatives, and Black Soldier Flies offer us a sustainable source of protein that can be cultivated and harvested at scale, without much of the ecological impact of other sources of protein, like pork, beef, or mutton 🪰 You can learn more about our company, trial results and product innovation via Engineering News by clicking the link below ⬇️ #Innovation #Protein #FunctionalProtein #BSF #Farming #FlyFarm #Sustainability #Flavour #AgriTech #PetFeed

The nation’s seen huge upheaval in the last eight years. A flawed food system has left the UK at the tipping point of catastrophic environmental and human health crises. We need policies that create jobs, improve rural livelihoods while delivering sustainable and economically viable food and farming systems Restoring this balance and equity requires ambition and vision from Government. The long-term effects of recent policies are still unfolding, but the need for action is urgent. One thing is clear; we must aspire to accomplish more. By considering organic’s four founding principles, our new manifesto identifies solutions that address the huge disparity that exists in current food and farming systems. The Principles of Health, Ecology, Fairness, and care are the roots from which organic agriculture grows and develops. They express the contribution that organic agriculture can make to the world, and a vision to improve all agriculture in a global context. Implementing OF&G’s recommendations would have a massive, beneficial impact on the resilence and fairness of our food system. Organic is a defined farming system and operates to the highest level of compliance to deliver on all four of the principles outlined The recent formal adoption of regulation on nature restoration by the EU shows that, with political will, change is possible. By advocating for policy changes that support health, ecology, fairness, and care, we can create a sustainable, equitable, vibrant and healthy food system. Organic is a defined farming system and operates to the highest level of compliance. Organic is part of the solution to the challenges confronting us but is not just about changing farming practices, it is about championing a profound, positive impact on our society and the planet. #NOC24 #ThePowerOfOrganic #proudtobeorganic #IGrowYourFood #IFOAMorganicseurope #regenerativefarming #ofgorganic #sustainability #agriculturebiologique #health #sustainablefarming #organicfarming #organic #organicfood #organiclife #UKorganic #organicresearchcentre #biodynamic #sustainabledevelopment #farmingforthefuture Paul Holmbeck Eric Gall Vicki Hird Sarah Compson Alex Cullen James Cashmore Adam Forrest Adrian Carne Cristina Dimetto Maria Taffurelli Steven Jacobs Becky George Debs Roberts Jo Barron

Organic Agriculture Marketing | Agriculture Value Chain Systems Development | Project Management Specialist | Sustainable Supply Chains | Organic Market Intelligence
Embarking on the journey of a farmer or entrepreneur is no easy feat. The delicate balance of skills in these roles is often overshadowed by market forces, determining the success of our endeavors. Yet, when these forces are distorted by adversarial agents like brokers, farmers resort to unconventional techniques for survival. To tackle the harsh reality of toxic pesticides and chemicals compromising our food supply, there's an alternative - the Organic path. It's not a simple switch; as a farmer you must unlearn and adapt. Going organic offers a spectrum of benefits, including shorter journeys for products, fewer gatekeepers (though not none, as it's a growing industry), and a consumer base interested in transparent production processes, free from harmful chemicals. Now, why am I sharing this with you? Because at Kilimohai Organic, we've embraced a mission: Quality, Trust, and Guarantee. Everyone matters in our value chain, from farmers negotiating at the table to traders reaching as many organic farmers as possible, and consumers invited to be part of the process. Through our PMCA Approach (credits to the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL), we create platforms for collaboration. Recently, with the support of the Biovision Foundation, we installed a cold room for one of our valued partners (FINE AROMAS PRIVATE LIMITED), combating post-harvest losses and innovating with chopped organic vegetables. This is just one tale in a tapestry of others. From farmer cooperatives crafting the best-tasting organic juices (story to follow soon) to unique snacks like organic orange-fleshed sweet potato creations (a collaboration with Sweettunda), the sector is poised for unprecedented growth. In the past four months alone, over USD 150,000 worth of organic products have been traded ( credits to the OLIA team Wowzi and Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL ). But, trust me, that's just the tip of the iceberg. 🌊 You've seen the ripples, but the tsunami of innovation and growth in the organic sector is on the horizon. You ain't seen nothing yet. Join us at Kilimohai Organic on this transformative journey. www.kilimohaikenya.org 🌿 #OrganicRevolution #SustainableAgriculture #InnovationInFarming #KilimohaiOrganic #IamOrganified Benjamin Gräub, Mike Otieno, Markus Arbenz, Nicoletta Maestrini, Clement Rurinja,Omoke Brian, Sylvia Kuria 🇰🇪, Fabian Kohler, Martin Schmid, Frank Eyhorn
