Most Fridays, my husband, Jonathan Wilgenbus-Lamb, represents Housing Rights at the Woman's Aid One-stop-shop (collaboration between Women's Aid Federation Northern Ireland and Police Service of Northern Ireland). The extent of abuse that some women endure in their own homes disclosed during these sessions is frequently heartbreaking. Suffering women are often left with little choice but to "suck it up". The alternative is being homeless. Providing struggling women with alternative housing options is an essential part of addressing the increasing challenge of domestic abuse. It is heartening to witness the public and not-for-profit sectors engaging in meaningful discussions about this important issue. Like with many social-economic issues, a meaningful response from the private sector can also have a significant positive impact. I was really encouraged to see my own organization Liberty IT launch our Domestic Violence Policy earlier in May. This policy is designed to encourage disclosure of domestic abuse and to outline the support available from the organization for those experiencing or supporting someone experiencing domestic abuse. The policy includes practical measures such as expediting the process of changing the bank account into which a salary is deposited. This simple action helps victims of abuse regain their financial independence. Additionally, the policy includes paid time off to alleviate stress for colleagues who need time for self-care or to improve their home environment. This in addition to other provisions.

The report “Women survivors of domestic abuse and their lived experiences of temporary safe accommodation in England: January to June 2023” from the ONS explores the experiences of women accessing different forms of temporary accommodation. It sheds important light on what it is actually like to flee domestic abuse. From worrying about not being able to safely return to pay back some borrowed money for a train fare, to not being able to feed yourself or your children, the stories that the women shared bring home the real and daily challenges women face in escaping domestic abuse.
