WLP's Executive Director, Jennifer Hanlon Wigon, is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Women's Shelter Network, which has submitted a request for a $55,000,000 increase to Emergency Solution Grants. This funding has a 15% set aside of Formula Grant funds to be directed to women’s and children’s shelter and safe haven programs in the Fiscal Year 2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) Appropriations Bill. Women and children often encounter traumatic life events prior to experiencing homelessness and require high-special-need services to address the impacts of gender-based violence and trauma. Frontline organizations are facing significant challenges in responding to growing homelessness rates. Additional funding is crucial for basic operations, human services, and enriched supportive services that facilitate successful transitions to long-term stable housing. Collectively, we hold the power to save and change the lives of countless women and children across the nation.

If there’s one thing we know about Tulsans, it’s that we show up for each other. Homelessness is a community-wide issue and will require community-based solutions to solve it. The work that A Way Home for Tulsa partner agencies are doing is working to get Tulsans housed, but more of that work is needed, requiring more resources and community commitment to address this critical issue. In case one needed more evidence that Housing First is a failure with catastrophic results, please read the attached article. Housing First is two things: 1. a repositioning from a continuum of options for all people to PSH for chronically homelessness only and 2. an eligibility screen that excludes children & PREVENTS PREVENTION and early intervention. We can - we must - restore the Awardwinning Continuum of Care.

Mayor Reeves shared that Pensacola cannot open a low-barrier homeless shelter without support from our local business community. Reeves hired Jon DeCarmine to write a report to figure out what it would cost to create a homeless shelter in our community. His report showed that a shelter in Pensacola could cost anywhere between $2.19 million and $3.47 million. DeCarmine, Executive Director of GRACE Marketplace, shared that 80% of the cost for a low-barrier shelter would need to be funded by local government and community partners. Today, as a record 89,000 New Yorkers (including 33,000 children) are in shelters, more than 379,000 households (including over 375,000 children) are in rental arrears and at risk of homelessness. The solution is clear; the average per household arrears of $3,300 is a fraction of the $100,000 per household cost of shelter. The most impactful and cost-effective step to ending homelessness is preventing it.

Trigger Warning: Discussion of Family Violence Last week, I attended The Today Family Violence Help Centre 2nd Annual #Illuminating #Hope #Garden #Cocktail Party in #Edmonton. The Today Centre, a critically life-saving #organization, offers free, short-term support for #adults targeted by #family #violence, regardless of situation, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, culture, or religion. Over the course of the event, I learned in detail how The Today Centre provides #immediate, #integrated, and #inclusive services to individuals #impacted by #family #violence. Hearing firsthand about #personal #experiences of family violence was profoundly sad, yet it was also a #beacon of #hope due to the #critical #life-#saving supports facilitated by The Today Family Violence Help Centre. Here are some of the key takeaways from what I learned: ➡️Family violence #does #not #discriminate based on age, income, race, or relationship status. ➡️Not all #heroes wear capes; many are workers and #volunteers at The Today Centre. ➡️Domestic violence is often #invisible, hiding behind closed doors. ➡️Hope exists thanks to the dedication of The Today Centre’s workers and #volunteers. ➡️People do care, and their #support makes a significant difference. ➡️One person can make a positive difference, and we can all be that person by #listening, #donating, #volunteering, #advocating, #learning the signs of violence, and being a #friend. 📣Call to Action: It takes just #one #person to make a #positive difference. We are grateful for the continued support from the Nationwide Foundation for A New Leaf’s Homeless and Domestic Violence Shelter Services, and for Sr. AVP, Eric M., volunteer service on our Board of Directors. With this year’s contribution, A New Leaf will provide services that address social determinants of health for community members experiencing homelessness and domestic violence. During the past few years, Phoenix rental prices have increased much faster than incomes, making it harder for renters to stay in their homes. In January 2024, a record number of evictions were filed in Maricopa County, creating a desperate need for services that provide shelter and support for individuals experiencing homelessness. The intersection of domestic violence and homelessness is undeniable. Approximately 1 in 4 women and women with children are homeless because of their experiences with domestic violence, and women who are homeless are more vulnerable to domestic and sexual violence. Support from community partners, like Nationwide and the Nationwide Foundation, increases A New Leaf’s capacity to offer more than a bed in a shelter. Our wrap-around services and a continuum of care help people move from crisis to long-term stability.

Leeze’s new blog is on system solutions to support minors experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Hint: they are all cross-system and/or multidisciplinary approaches that put the power back in the hands of youth themselves. These approaches all also accept referrals/clients under ALL definitions of homelessness including at risk and unstably housed populations. You can’t effectively serve minors if you’re excluding unstably housed youth and youth at risk of imminently losing their housing. We get asked all the time how to best support minors. New Destiny Housing Corporation are experts on the intersection of domestic violence and housing – and their new report is a thoughtful exploration of the nuanced challenges survivors face when seeking safe housing in NYC. Her Justice is proud to have contributed information about our clients' own experiences to this report. “Domestic violence and homelessness are inherently linked. In the United States, 80% of women with children struggling with homelessness have also experienced domestic violence, and 57% of all women experiencing homelessness report domestic violence as the immediate cause of their homelessness […] Access to safe and affordable housing is one of survivors’ biggest, most urgent concerns and it often determines whether they leave their abuser and stay alive.” Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/epbBGmuy
We are thrilled to share our new report, “A Crisis Compounded: The Dual Crises of Domestic Violence and Homelessness,” which exposes the barriers that domestic violence survivors face when trying to secure affordable housing after escaping from abusive relationships and the long-term impact of abuse on survivors and their families. Drawing from city and state data, the report shows that domestic violence continues to be a leading cause of homelessness for families, surpassing evictions, and that survivors are more likely to move from shelter to shelter rather than permanent housing. It also highlights the steps New York City and State can take to increase access to housing resources and help move survivors quickly from shelters to permanent homes.
