Happy Climate Week to all those attending in-person and virtually. I'll be sitting this year out but wanted to remind folks that the climate crisis is a result of our collective decisions. Here are some tips as you navigate this week: 💸 1) Pay attention to who is in the room, especially in spaces where decisions about finance, tech solutions and policy are made. Is it the same group of individuals (or institutional representatives)? How can you disseminate crucial knowledge to disperse power? 😶🌫️ 2) Leave your comfort zone. If you're attending the official climate week events, go check out the People's Climate Week events, such as at The New School, and vice versa. As much as we like to divide ourselves into different camps, both sides are ultimately on the same planet. Take time to have a conversation from someone on the "other side". 🗑️ 3) Reduce your waste. The decisions you make everyday contribute to climate change, especially when it comes gathering in large numbers in a densely populated metropolitan city. Take public transit, walk or ride a bike between destinations (no excuse being in NYC), go to restaurants that reduce their food waste, drop of compostable items throughout the city, contribute funds to community gardens, or visit community-led climate initiatives such as aquaponics taught at Oko Farms in BK. Join us tomorrow, Thursday July 25th, for Carbon Neutral Coffee! We'll come together at 7:45am at our new location - Southern Market in Lancaster (100 S. Queen St.) - to connect, inspire, and collectively advance sustainability solutions. This meetup's featured speaker will be local author Cliff Lewis, a Lancaster-based author of a climate-themed young adult book, We the Future. "The debut novel by Cliff Lewis is a compelling introduction to climate science for any young reader unlikely to binge-read the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," according to his website. "But, at its heart, We the Future is about more than the climate. It's about the practical steps that everyday kids can take to organize themselves for real world change." Cliff will be sharing about his background, why he chose to write a climate novel for young people, and how they've been responding to these themes and conversations. It will be a good chance to engage someone with a unique window into how the next generation is thinking about climate change. As always, we'll have plenty of time for questions and conversation. Such a brilliant post. Voluntarism will not deliver a sustainable future. Only Long term, joined up, ratcheting policy, lifting the entire economy. Each and every company reducing the footprint of its own value chain is critical. Advocating for a better policy system is at least as important

I have mixed feelings about not being at #ClimateWeekNYC this week. Mostly I’m very happy to leave it to others (my brilliant colleagues Cami Daeninck and James Vaccaro are in NYC, flying the flag for Volans). But there is one set of conversations I will be sorry not to be part of… on #ResponsiblePolicyEngagement. It’s great that this is becoming a more prominent topic, but let’s not kid ourselves: we’re still in the foothills. Last week, Volans launched a report on the role of trade associations (part of an ongoing inquiry into mobilising trade associations as a force for good). In it, we highlight three big shifts needed as the responsible policy engagement agenda matures: 1: from disclosure to action. Dozens of companies have now started to report on their direct and indirect climate policy engagement. Investor engagement (esp via Climate Action 100+) has been crucial to making this happen. But disclosure is only helpful if it acts as a springboard for action – and there’s much less evidence of that happening to date (especially with regard to addressing trade association misalignment or inaction). 2: from pioneers to mainstream. Most companies are only just waking up to the business case (and moral imperative) for using their political influence to tilt the balance in favour of ambitious climate policies. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I believe that framing this as a responsibility issue is potentially limiting. If we want lots of companies to invest serious resources in ensuring their policy engagement is both science-based and impactful, we need them to see it as strategic, not a “hygiene factor”. 3: from siloed to integrated. Climate policy engagement may be the topic du jour, but we need companies and trade associations to use their political muscle for good on a whole range of other topics – from nature to human rights. For companies, policy engagement should be part of your strategy for addressing all material risks and impacts, not just climate. But, even if more companies were up for this, there are big gaps in the accountability and data ecosystem that need to be filled. These are the issues I would be raising if I were at the various gatherings of the responsible policy engagement community happening in New York this week.
