According to the UN, half of world population is 30 or younger and this is expected to increase by the end of 2030. This means it's essential to work with young people in order to achieve global goals. Young people are widely known as "digital natives " due to their ability to create solutions for global issues using technology. As we are reaching the deadline of the Agenda 2030, it is crucial to include, allow and empower youth to actively participate in global goals. In terms of empowering youth, I trust that we must create initiatives to include all youth especially, youth in vulnerable communities as they are vital for promoting awareness on global peace, climate change, human rights, and more. Today I had the privilege to lead a discussion at the IUCN Regional Conservation Forum for Europe, North and Central Asia on "The Role of the Youth in driving the transformation we need".   And yes, it seems that “youth inclusion” (not just in the conservation sector) is currently a “hot topic” everywhere you look… add the words ‘transformation’ or 'transformative change’ to the mix, and we’ve got yourself an audience...   And yet, what we have been asking ourselves at WWF-NL is really: and so what? And what does this all mean? Because, at the end of the day, it is not only ill-intended actors that may perpetuate tokenistic approaches to inclusion. As large-scale nature organisations, we all run the risk of engaging in some of these.   This is where critical thinking and honest reflection come in, which at WWF-NL we have been undergoing with some amazing youth partners. It starts by asking ourselves: what impact in the nature and climate agenda are we actually facilitating by engaging with youth groups? How is youth participation (which is effectively increasing within organisations and multilateral spaces) actually influencing policy decisions and bringing about tangible outcomes for people and nature? How ready are we to work with the youth as equal partners towards change at a societal scale?   The discussion didn’t end today, nor it will end tomorrow.
