5th Week Reflections [Building connections, one step at a time] When I joined, I was mindful of the mission I was entrusted with. I took time to understand what we do, why we do it, and how we could make it even better—not by changing for the sake of change, but by deepening and sustaining what was already unique and meaningful. With the rebranding of our department as Befriender Engagement and Experience, I reflected on what it truly means—for me, my team, our Befrienders, the families we serve, and the organization. This led to a vision: to build a community of care, where everyone—children, families, Befrienders, and staff—is supported and uplifted. Staying connected with our Befrienders was crucial. They’re the heart of what we do, and it’s just as important that they understand our mission and purpose. The first step? Taking care of my team. On my one-month mark, we went for a team bonding session—a chance to rest, recharge, and align before building stronger connections with the larger Befriender community. Together, we brainstormed and took a small yet meaningful step: introducing ourselves through a newsletter. It’s a simple gesture, but it lays the foundation for deeper connections. Better late than never! #LeadershipJourney #BuildingConnections #CommunityOfCare

"This moment marks a powerful evolution of the community we've built together over the past years. The Motherhood is a direct response to what we've heard from moms like you all over the country — we're tired of waiting around for change, so we're here to do what moms always do: get sh*t done. And we're going to do it together. The vision for The Motherhood is ambitious, from shifting the narrative and our culture to making changes in our workplaces and winning legislative fights. But we know that none of us can do it alone. It's going to take all of us coming together." #TipTuesday: Sign up for the mailing list (https://momsfirst.us/) and join Reshma Saujani and other movement leaders for one of 2 kick-off calls with The Motherhood: Tuesday, June 4 | 7:30 p.m. ET or Wednesday, June 12 | 3:00 p.m. ET #MothersAtWork #WorkingMom #WorkingMothers #GenderEquality

What’s a read you should check out? Sara picked up this book, “Adrift: America in 100 Charts,” by Scott Galloway, and after hearing some of the stats she shared I (Sasha) had to pick it up myself. One of the charts details the decline in community-based activities, and the most alarming to me as someone who works in community engagement, was the percentage of adults who talk to their neighbors. What was 71% in 2008, dropped to 54% in 2017, and I can’t imagine what it is now after the COVID years, especially in a state where we encouraged people to stay home and isolate. Galloway writes, “Facebook is no substitute for face-to-face conversations or deep connection we form alongside others for the betterment of the community.” I could not agree more! As we plunge into engagement season with the sun shining and outdoor community events, I want to encourage teams to focus on building relationships throughout your communities. HOW? It can be as simple as hosting pop-up conversations at large apartment complexes, or partnering with neighborhood associations to do clean-ups. Show up with coffee, pastries, and intentional conversation topics, and KEEP showing up. One event won’t do, it’s really important to be consistent. Did you go on one date and get married to your significant other the next day? No… these things take time. Let’s encourage COMMUNITY. #SSWConsulting #Engagement #CommunityEngagement #Adrift #Relationshipbuilding #EncourageCommunity #KnowYourNeighbors #newyorktimes #newyorktimesbestseller #ScottGallowayAdrift #ScottGalloway

As the holiday season draws near, it’s natural to pause and reflect on what truly matters. For us, this is a time to celebrate the inspiring work of our grantees and peer organizations. This year, we’ve seen incredible examples of how aligning research, policy, and practice can uplift children and families. Whether advocating for child care access, amplifying immigrant families’ voices, or advancing economic and racial justice, these efforts remind us that centering children doesn’t just serve them—it serves the common good. During this season of gratitude, we are reminded of the shared values that guide us: responsibility, inclusion, and respect. These values, often gifted by those who came before us, compel us to act with care for our relationships and with boldness in our vision for the future. Let’s recommit to listening deeply, working collaboratively, and taking risks for justice. Together, we can create a future where every child and family has the opportunity to thrive. This holiday season we will begin highlighting the organizations and resources that inspire us every day. How are you reflecting on your work this season? Let us know! #SocialJustice #ChildAdvocacy #Equity #thankful

Calling all white professionals within my network it's nearly a New Year, and therefore there are new opportunities for change! As we step into 2025, let’s reflect on the power we have to create more inclusive, equitable communities through Accountability, Allyship, and Advocacy. These three pillars are not just ideals—they are actionable steps that can transform our workplaces, homes, and communities. 💡 Accountability: Reflect on your biases and privilege. How can you grow and take responsibility for creating change? 💡 Allyship: Let's move beyond performative gestures. Show up consistently for Global Majority communities, challenge microaggressions, and amplify diverse voices. 💡 Advocacy: Keep pushing for systemic change. Whether it’s championing inclusive workplace policies or mentoring young people, advocacy ensures long-term progress. 🌟 Start the year inspired! Join me on Thursday 2nd January, from 12–2pm for the next episode of Uncomfortable Conversations on Urban Xtra Radio. Together we’ll explore how these three pillars can guide us in creating meaningful change. Let’s set intentions to foster equity, justice, and inclusion this year. Listen live and join the discussion via Instagram @anti_racistmums. Together, we can make a difference. #Accountability #Allyship #Advocacy #Equity #SocialChange #UncomfortableConversations

This week I've chatted with a couple of male senior creatives that have asked for part time hours, so that they can take care of their young families. The industry NEEDS MORE LEADERS LIKE THIS 🫶🏼 This example shows others that part time hours is for EVERYONE. Sharing the responsibility of caring for young families is for EVERYONE. #CreativeNatives #FlexibleWorkForCreatives
