I'm back from MIPCOM Cannes. Here are the takeaways: 1. Jane Turton CEO of All3Media had a great refreshing take: -Everyone is talking doom and gloom, strikes, AI, things are changing, etc. -Her take: Are things really changing? She mentioned change is the only constant and she could recall how VHS and DVDs were going to kill the film industry, etc. 2. YouTube is the way -YouTube now accounts for 10 percent of family room TV viewing 3. Buyers are more interested in non-exclusive leases than buying IP. 4. Broadcasters now act as streamers and streamers act as broadcasters 5. I didn't see many middle of the road films in terms of quality -It was either tier 1 Hollywood, top of the food chain -Or the quality looked straight up amature I can't wait to go back next year! #MIPCOM

This one isn’t about work related stuff albeit it refers of relationship and strange phenomena that we are part of with businesses nowadays. Specifically I refer this one to Netflix which decided to ride on a wave of profit rather than quality of product. In recent months I often see the „ranking” of most watched productions at the moment, in Ireland. Of course it changes based on geolocation, but that’s not the point. Continuously Netflix pushes whichever crappy original they create and make a false impression for people that these are worth watching. I tested it and I am definitely part of the problem, because my watching time counts towards algorithms towards pushing this incredibly poor movies and series towards the top, making infinite loop of gaining new watchers for that „vomit” of cinematography. Most recent is „La Palma” which only positive is the landscape of La Palma itself (created by nature not Netflix) and some very decent visual effects that can easily stand hand in hand with proper big productions (this was quite surprising), but… Plot is ridiculous… Actors annoying… Characters flat and single dimensional… Decisions made by characters are dumbest anyone can screenwrite… Scenario totally sci-fi… Science in the movie is „invented”… Star Wars and Dune, are more believable as a non-fiction than what they set out for… The worst though is the sheer disrespect to the natives, who suffered through enormous disaster and tragedy in 2021 just to get a bunch of Nordic creators to come to their island, and not even take their tragedy under account, focusing on the most important nations (according to creators): Norwegian and Americans 🤦♂️ others simply don’t count… TL;DR One of the poorest executions of very badly written scenario (based on readymade story that they could easily enhance), full of pseudo-inclusive elements and negatively-woke narrative, topped by arrogance, crypto-discrimination and a lot of other issues that no one seems to recognise. The fact that IMDb.com score gives it 6.4 out of 10, only shows how low we are at the moment in terms of requirements for a good production, and it’s enough to make something popular to make people believe that it’s good 🫣 #apocalypseisnow #theworldcollapses #lowbar #lapalma #netflix #imdb #reviews
