A few weeks ago, I shared a post relating to South Wales FRS opening the doors of their Fire Stations and welcoming women who need a safe place from domestic violence/abuse. The post received some deeply fascinating discussions and it was clear that many shared the concern of how safe Fire Stations actually are. The 185 page review published yesterday detailed 82 recommendations needed to help improve the culture of the organisation, citing sexual harassment, negative assumptions about women; domestic abuse and physical aggression outside of work; the expression of negative views in relation to the protected characteristics of sex, race and/or religion; bullying; harmful ‘banter’; drug and alcohol abuse; and improper interference with procedures. Clearly those who voiced their concerns a few weeks ago were absolutely right to speak up! Moving forward their CFO has decided to retire (not resign) and it will be down to someone else to try and fix the cultural issues that exist. Where do you start with a task like this? I believe the solution requires inspirational leadership, open dialogue and honest yet difficult conversations and above all, accountability. #changeispossible #culturematters /2024-01-03/fire-chief-to-step-down-after-damning-report-into-culture-within-the-service

The recent allegations of workplace abuse at Brandoville Studios are profoundly concerning and point to a significant failure in creating a healthy work environment. Employees reporting excessive work hours, verbal abuse, and extreme mistreatment reflect an organizational culture where power imbalances went unchecked. In a professional setting, such behavior violates ethical norms and can lead to legal repercussions. This case aligns with our workshops' core themes on #workplacemisconduct and #dueinquiry. It underscores the critical need for companies to establish clear policies for reporting and addressing such abuse and to uphold transparency and accountability. Employees should be encouraged to voice their concerns without fear of reprisal, and leadership should be equipped to handle complaints with integrity. A robust #workplaceinvestigation process is vital to delivering justice while upholding the dignity of the workplace. Ultimately, this case should serve as a wake-up call for organizations across industries to examine their practices and prioritize employee well-being. #Misconduct should never be ignored; due inquiry is essential to maintaining a respectful and fair work culture. https://wix.to/LTSeIcA #CorporateResponsibility #WorkplaceEthics #internalinvestigation #corporatesecurity #hrbusinesspartner #workplaceculture #peopleandculture

In other news... Aside from the updates on the election and party manifestos, I read a really interesting article (please see below) on British stars calling for a crackdown on the bullying and sexual harassment prevalent in the UK Entertainment Industry. I thought I would remind businesses that "The Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023", will come into force on 26 October 2024, and will: 1. introduce a new duty on employers to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment of their employees; and 2. give employment tribunals the power to uplift sexual harassment compensation by up to 25% where an employer is found to have breached this new duty – (this uplift could be significant, as awards in the most serious cases can exceed £50,000). Are you ready? If not, the starting point would be to review your internal policies. #sexualharassment #employmentlawchanges2024 https://lnkd.in/e34EsAPG

Unraveling Truths: The Uvalde Report and the Power of Wokeness In recent times, the concept of "wokeness" has become a central theme in our collective conversations about social justice, equality, and accountability. A poignant example of this can be found in the Uvalde Report, a compelling illustration of how embracing wokeness deepens our understanding of events, fosters transparency, and fuels actionable change. This report, born out of tragedy, serves as a stark reminder that acknowledging uncomfortable truths is a crucial step towards building a safer, more equitable world. Deepening Our Understanding: The Uvalde Report stands as a testament to the power of critical self-awareness and an unyielding commitment to truth. In delving into the events that transpired, it goes beyond mere acknowledgment, aiming to understand the systemic factors and individual choices that led to the tragedy. This depth of understanding is foundational to dismantling ingrained biases and rectifying flaws in our systems. Transparency as a Catalyst for Change: Transparency is the cornerstone of accountability, and the Uvalde Report exemplifies this principle. By openly addressing the events and their underlying causes, the report invites the public into a space of shared knowledge. This transparency is not just about revealing shortcomings but is a bold statement that signals a commitment to learning from the past and fostering a culture of openness. Actionable Change: Wokeness is not merely about awareness; it demands tangible action. The Uvalde Report goes beyond being a documentation of past events; it is a blueprint for change. By outlining specific actions, recommendations, and safeguards, it sets the stage for a proactive response. This commitment to change is a manifestation of wokeness in action, ensuring that the lessons learned are not in vain. Preventing Future Loss of Life: Perhaps the most critical aspect of the Uvalde Report is its focus on preventing future tragedies. Wokeness, in this context, means recognizing the systemic failures that contributed to the loss of life and implementing safeguards to protect against such outcomes in the future. By doing so, it acknowledges the value of every life and the responsibility we collectively bear to protect one another. The Uvalde Report serves as an inspiring example of how wokeness, far from being a divisive or empty buzzword, can be a catalyst for positive change. It teaches us that understanding the complexities of our world, embracing transparency, and taking decisive action are not just virtues but obligations. Wokeness as a mindset that fosters critical self-awareness, openness, and learning from the past. As we reflect on the lessons embedded in this report, let us be awakened to the immense potential for positive change when we confront uncomfortable truths with courage and commitment.

ADA Compliance is not strictly specific to physical barriers. How does the ADA ensure work, recreational, and community environments are not discriminatory? Here are some of my ideas: *Produce a proactive PSA series. *Create a volunteer team to screen ADA compliance complaints to increase the number of complaints that get a formal review. *Offer a virtual ADA compliance certificate. *Partner with the insurance industry to decrease Workers Compensation and Directors & Officers premiums to businesses that require management and leadership to participate in ADA education. What are your ideas?
The burden of ensuring ADA compliance falls onto the 61 million Americans with disabilities. We must consistently fight for elevators to work, for sidewalks to be barrier free, for ramps to be the right pitch and free of trash. Here is why we need ADA police. #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityRights #AccessibleSpaces https://bit.ly/4arLV6A ID: A woman in a wheelchair sits at the bottom of a large staircase. Management consultant supporting brave change across health and education sector. Helping government, help citizens.
Despite many existing laws on Disability, we have poor implementation systems. We consistently play deaf to the needs of others, as long as we are not touched. Life is already difficult for PWD can we just make it easier? Every life is worth living well. #disabilityadvocate

The EEOC has issued an updated guidance on harassment in the workplace. It contains sections designed to explain how to spot whether harassment is based on a statutorily protected class. Very useful to practioners and employers/employees. Take a look.
