Clean energy in the Philippines: is there an opportunity for you? According to the US International Trade Administration (ITA) (January 2024), the Philippine government envisions the country will increase its renewable energy (RE) share in the supply mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2050. A greater RE share promotes energy efficiency and conservation and provides an opportunity for emerging technologies to improve energy security. ITA estimates that 52 GW of additional power capacity will be required by 2045. The COP28 UAE was more than a convening for climate change. It also gathered global players to take action on women's empowerment as a crucial aspect of sustainable development and climate action. We are thrilled about the partnerships and initiatives formed during the events, notably: 1) The partnership to support women’s economic empowerment and ensure a gender-responsive just transition. 2) The $1.8 million technical assistance agreement between the African Development Bank Group - Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) and the Export Trading Group to enhance women's entrepreneurial skills in Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. As we move forward, we must continue advocating for gender equality and include women's perspectives and experiences in all aspects of sustainable development. We encourage individuals, organisations, and governments to take inspired action and support initiatives for women's empowerment. How was your April? I was privileged to participate in the regional workshop on Equality in Climate Action: Planning for a gender inclusive future in Africa convened by UN Women, UN Climate Change and UNDP in Nairobi, Kenya. As one of the young women supported by UNICEF who attended the workshop, I had an opportunity be a panelist and share my experience in engaging with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the National Adaption Plan (NAP) Processes in Malawi; zeroing in on inclusive national governance structures. The workshop put a spotlight on how #Africa has and is faring in advancing gender issues in the climate change discourse, taking into account the five-year enhanced Lima Work Programme on Gender (LWPG) and its Gender Action Plan. Little progress has been made on domestication and implementation of gender-responsive policies. Acknowledging women and girls as most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change must equally acknowledge women and girls' voices matter in climate solutions. #ActForEqual #GenerationEqual #ClimateJustice #GenderJustice

Global Action Themes Must be SMART and Locally-Translatable Atem Dut De Kuek — March 12, 2024 A latest report by the World Bank Group entitled Women, Business and the Law 2024 - World Bank shows a massive, wider-than-expected global gender gap, despite policy efforts and resource investment long before the current sustainable development goals (SDGs) replaced the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), starting a global effort in 2000 to tackle the indignity of poverty. The aim of this blogpost is to explore the role of messaging in driving global actions on SDGs, taking the case of this year's international Women’s Day (IWD 2024) themed by the United Nations as “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”. The campaign theme is “inspire inclusion”. As usual, nation-states are expected to translate the global theme into local contexts, but this is largely not the case, given large bureaucracies in budgets and timelines. Sharing the attached extract, with links to various gender impact toolkits and guidelines, from a presentation I gave yesterday as part of a webinar on "Applying Gender and Social Inclusion Assessment Tools for Infrastructure Projects", organized by the Asia Foundation's USAID and AUSTRALIA MEKONG SAFEGUARDS PROGRAM. The toolkits & guidelines in this are all specific to #gender & inclusion for #infrastructure and #energy projects, and produced by the Asian Development Bank, DFAT, World Bank and G20 Global Infrastructure hub. The objective of yesterday's event, organised by The Asia Foundation, was to increase awareness of available tools to collect gender data and measure social gender impacts in the energy and transportation infrastructure projects across the Mekong subregion. I was honoured to join other speakers Ryce Chanchai from UN Women, Joost Siteur & thank especially Marisna Yulianti, who facilitated the event, for the opportunity to collaborate on this. I spoke about measuring gender impact as part of projects & operations, giving some examples including from the Asia Pacific region. The well-attended event brought together stakeholders with different roles in the energy and transportation infrastructure sectors, including regulators, financiers, and project implementers, with the view to elevating recognition & discussion about the relevance and applicability of gender in the energy and transportation sectors.
