#BlackMenLead: Sekou Kaalund calls himself an “accidental banker.” At age five, the former head of Chase Consumer Bank for the Northeast Division told his parents he planned to run for U.S. Senate so he could create laws to help communities in need. “From a young age, my whole anchoring was on how can I be of service and drive impact,” says Kaalund, head of branch and small business banking at U.S. Bank. Banking wasn’t even on Kaalund’s radar until he won an award sponsored by the Executive Leadership Council while attending Duke University that offered the opportunity to learn from Black leaders at top companies across the U.S. “I realized that I could have a greater impact by influencing capital flows and leading people,” Kaalund says, which caused him to pivot his career aspirations. In a career that’s taken him from the New York Federal Reserve to fifteen years at JPMorgan Chase, Kaalund has helped to narrow the racial wealth gap by bringing more people from underserved communities – including Black Americans — into the financial system and helping them to achieve greater economic success. As we grow our abilities as a leader, we automatically grow our ability to impact the world. If our leadership ability stagnates, so does our ability to make a bigger impact. Celebrating myself has always been a struggle. But I wanted to take a moment to talk about something at Fifth Third Bank called “Spirit of the Pin”. It's a way for us to recognize and celebrate our colleagues who embody our core values and let them know their hard work and contributions are seen & valued. I absolutely love it & it quickly became one of my favorite things to send to others. Because I believe that people should be celebrated and appreciated in the workplace. As I grow, I believe you should share your wins. Especially your wins at work. Not to be overly proud or to boast, but because you have put in the time, effort and work to deserve that win. We don’t do what we do everyday for recognition, but someone taking the time to appreciate your efforts and dedication every so often definitely feels good! This is my first “Spirit of the Pin” and it came as such a pleasant surprise. Onboarding as a new manager to an established team can come with its challenges no matter what. I’ve been thinking a lot along these lines recently. Longevity (or time) is an underappreciated ingredient for success. We’ve all been celebrating #Nigerian billionaire investor Adebayo Ogunlesi since BlackRock announced a proposed $12.5 billion acquisition of his private equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) last week. At 70, Mr. Ogunlesi has had a nearly 50-year career with 40+ years specifically in the investments field. We drastically underestimate what we can achieve over a long, multi-year/decade time horizon. Simultaneously, we overestimate what we can do in a short time (< 1 year).

This morning's gratitude practice goes to the Kittens 🙏🏻 From our days in the bustling Barclaycard New Customer Acquisition team back in March 2015 (when level 13 was THE place to be in Barclays HQ), to the present moment filled with job changes, birthdays, weddings, new homes, and even a touch of inevitable hair loss... it's been quite the ride! 👀 At last week's rendezvous, we pondered: how did a group of seemingly different individuals not only become friends but stay connected through the years? It all boils down to shared values: Respect and Integrity (coincidentally, also Barclays values). We embrace our differences, allowing each of us to authentically be ourselves and speak our minds freely. That mutual respect not only fosters personal growth (yes, Phil's palate has come a long way) but strengthens connection.
