Had a great evening at the Scotland Women in Technology event hosted by Lloyds Banking Group last night exploring how Failure can lead to Success. Thank you to Ola Clark for organising the event, and host/panellists for their candour, time and insights :) Here are some of my own reflections from the evening: 1. #Allyship - There was a disappointingly low number of men in the audience. The panel had a brilliant discussion about bias, conscious and unconscious, and the need for society to take steps to bringing equity and diversity to the workplace (and home!). However, if men don't start joining these conversations, listening and learning then how are we ever going to see real change? 2. #BeCurious - Much of what the panel discussed showed how being curious, in all parts of our lives, can lead to much more successful outcomes. It can lead to better understanding our colleagues, their experiences and the ways in which our actions impact the world around us, for better and worse. Establishing this empathy makes us better at our jobs as well as starts to break down the barriers that are so easy to build around us. 3. #NotABug - A conversation that resonated really deeply for me was how we need to view failure differently, and often we mislabel. It is so common in the software world to hear developers saying "It's a feature, not a bug". So let's apply that to this as well "Its a mistake, not a failure". 4. #FailFast - Embracing failure, digesting it and learning is key to growing. Failure is inevitable, despite doing all of the above, we cannot avoid it 100% of the time. To try to avoid failing is failing to avoid trying. Push yourself out of your comforts, get it wrong, learn and next time you will try something different which might just work. A reflection from my career, both when hiring and as a candidate is that my biggest learning and growth have come from mistakes and failures. Deleting a production database in week 4 as a software engineer was a REALLY bad start to my career, but I learnt a lot from that (as did my senior engineer who let it happen 🙈😅) . 5. #BeKind - My final reflection. We are all human and, like it or not, we have to spend time around one another. Be kind, look after one another, treat people with respect and forgive mistakes. Pay it forward and hopefully we can move to a society where failure isn't seen as a taboo, but rather encouraged as a learning opportunity.

There are more than 5m family firms in the UK, employing 14m people and making a vital contribution to the national and local communities. They represent nearly 30% of UK economic output and employing more than 50% of all those working in the private sector. It’s hugely important to our economy, even more so across the South West economy where over 85% of businesses are family firms, employing over 1.4m people according to Family Business UK. We play a key role in supporting family businesses across the UK and have invested in a number of resources and initiatives so family businesses have the support they need. One of those initiatives has been the development of ‘The Family Business learning programme’ accredited by The Chartered Banker Institute to support and upskill our NatWest Relationship Managers to better identify their characteristics in an ever changing world. I have thoroughly enjoyed the learning over the past few months and subsequent accreditation understanding the key characteristics of Family Businesses, navigating the complex decisions and critical relationships that are necessary to create and sustain a healthy family business and business family. here is another story for you My career journey at Standard Bank: The beginning after seeing fading away my deepest desire of working with the data science team of Standard Bank as part of graduate program I was very disappointed with myself because after a lot of interviews, tests and marathon to solve a domain specific problem I wasn't selected I've failed. You guys don't know it, but now you do, it was the passion to use data and all sorts of math, stats, algorithms and methods to derive answers and models that can make things better, that pushed me to apply for Standard Bank graduate program, the promise of the program was so good. Almost a week later received a call from people and culture (aka HR), asking me if I would like to be part of selection process for a position within Risk Management division and I said no, yes a straight no thank you but no. The woman in the other side started to tell all sorts of reasons why I should give it a try, I can tell you, that's a miracle, the success rate for the graduate program for Standard Bank that I was part of was bellow 1.5% (don't ask me how I got this number, just remember I am Computer Scientist) At some point I humbled myself and accepted to go through the selection process which again was tough, I remember to fail on the last test, because I skipped to many questions and the system closed They called me for the last interview, yes I said last, the management asked me all sorts of questions and give my answers as passionately as I could, because I wanted make sure that this would be my gratest interview ever and the last question came: are willing to work with something different from your domain of expertise? and my answer was resounding NO. The interview ended. I looked at heaven and said God you do know I did my best no matter the outcome I was great, with sadness on my face because deep inside I believed that I was too honest Believe or not , I soon as I as closed my laptop (I my selection process was online, it was 2021 due to COVID), I received a call from Standard Bank: Bania Fonseca, you were selected to be part of the Standard Bank graduate program. In Spring 2023, I applied for a course on banking research. I didn't realize at the time how great of an opportunity this would be to grow my professional skills and knowledge of the industry. Having finished up the semester, my group has completed an initial draft for the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) Community Bank Case Study competition. We have been researching how the bank closures of 2023 affected community banks. I would like to thank Carl F. Larsson, Ph.D. for the great semester. While we waited for the case to come out, we focused on personal growth and preparing for our careers. We would meet with different professionals in industries ranging from hedge funds, banking, and capital management, giving us opportunities to learn from experts. My highlight was meeting with the JMU College of Business Finance Executive Advisor Board and presenting what we had been working on, concluding with an open discussion break-out session. Finally, we met with many resources through JMU learning about each other’s strengths, conducting interviews, and preparing to be a good leader. I feel confident continuing our research next semester and finalizing our case study using the countless skills I have learned through this class. I would like to thank Professor Larsson, my teammates, and all the guest speakers who took the time to make this class special.
