In just a few days, nine women who have nobly served our board over the last 2-3 years are stepping down from their roles. Collectively, they have volunteered roughly 1,800 hours with WIF since they joined the board. They have discussed and deliberated a number of organizational changes in addition to attending monthly board meetings, leading committees, planning events, overseeing nonprofit partners, nominating new leaders, writing newsletter articles, and the list goes on! Una Osili's presentations are always insightful - another great #BPM2023CLT event organized by Valaida Fullwood and crew! My additional takeaways: - African-American donors are more generous as a percentage of income and tend to support religious causes and direct human services at a higher level - Giving to racial and social justice is an emerging area for many #philanthropists and donors in this area are more likely to say that they are motivated by human and societal well-being than donors to more traditional organizations. Although there are been some pull-backs in focus, I am personally hopeful that more organizations/givers will continue to engage in this work and support progress. - Future #nonprofit growth and evolution will come from expanding individual giving via technology (online giving + adapting to new tools like AI) & engaging the next generation of donors. For younger donors, participating in social movements and advocacy is seen as particularly valuable - is your non-profit engaging them in this work? Dianne Chipps Bailey
It was such an honor getting to attend another Black Philanthropy Month event hosted by NGAAP - Charlotte! Speaker Dr. Una Osili, Professor at Lily Family School of Philanthropy presented key findings from the newly released 2023 Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy (the longest-running, most extensive report on philanthropy in the U.S.) as well as data from the new Donors of Color Study. Her presentation dispelled many misconceptions about giving trends as they relate to race and high networth donors. Thank you for these amazing BPM events Valaida Fullwood!
