At the Reproductive Justice Initiative, we are deeply concerned about the increasing and disproportionate targeting of children and young people by policing. We asked Shareefa to provide insights into the alarming statistics behind police strip searches and stop-and-search practices involving children and youth: 📍More than 60 children are strip-searched each week in England and Wales, with Black and Asian children being disproportionately targeted. 📍25% of stop-and-search incidents involve young people. 📍 85% of stop-and-searches result in no incriminating findings. A study by The Runnymede Trust, a leading race equality think tank, reveals that Black people in England and Wales are ten times more likely to be searched by police. Additionally, Black children are more than six times as likely to undergo a strip search compared to white children. In The Guardian's coverage of the study, Dr. Shabna Begum, Chief Executive of the Runnymede Trust, stated: “Strip searches are inherently violent, humiliating, and harmful, especially for children. If we want to build safer communities and safeguard our children, we need to invest in our social infrastructure and ensure people have the opportunities and resources to thrive and flourish.” What Can You Do?👇🏾 ➡️ Intervene as a Bystander: If you witness a stop-and-search involving children, especially Black children, consider filming the incident to ensure accountability. ➡️ Educate and Empower: We encourage parents and guardians to read the StopWatch parent guide, which provides valuable information on discussing stop-and-search practices with children. Follow the work of Northern Police Monitoring Project, Netpol and local copwatch organisations. Fifty one years ago today, the Supreme Court issued its landmark 7–2 decision in Roe v. Wade. Eighteen months ago it was overturned. At Ellevate, it’s rare for us to talk directly about political issues, but when we do, it’s because we see the lines between the personal and political impacting freedom of choice. Impacting equality. Impacting our human rights. We believe that every person deserves the freedom to make decisions about their own life without living in fear. In this collective struggle, we acknowledge the intersectionality of this issue and that abortion bans reinforce systemic racism and economic injustice. As women, we have demonstrated incredible strength and resilience, prevailing through numerous challenges. And once again, we will continue to forge a path towards equality and justice. This week we saw that access to abortion, protecting LGBTQ+ rights, and building a community of care not hate are majority views and values. We know that these wins do not come easily. I am daily inspired and heartened by the work of groups that CGRE has the privilege of funding. These leaders are adapting to the ever-changing access landscape and work every day to ensure that all voices are heard in our democracy, despite attempts to limit access to services and the vote. Check out the Philanthropy News Digest (PND) article that addresses the evolving funding needs of organizations defending and advancing reproductive equity in the aftermath of Dobbs. Well before Dobbs, CGRE recognized the significance of funding state-based initiatives, enhancing organizational capacity, and addressing intersectional issues. Now, more than ever, it's crucial to support organizations in realizing their visions of reproductive freedom.

 🌟 Celebrating Alencia Johnson ✨ For #WomensHistoryMonth today, I want to share about the absolute powerhouse that is Alencia Johnson. 🌟 💪 Alencia is all about the intersection of social justice and culture change, cultivating over a decade of experience in advocacy, politics, corporate and entertainment – all in the name of achieving justice. Alencia founded 1063 West Broad — a social impact agency specializing in the intersection of culture, impact and purpose that connects brands, organizations and people to mission driven solutions. She has worked for the presidential campaigns of President Barack Obama, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and President Biden’s campaign; and held national roles at Planned Parenthood and GEICO. She was the Director of Public Engagement at Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. In addition to supporting the reproductive rights organization by engaging political, media, entertainment and corporate influencers to shift public opinion among perceptions of reproductive rights, she has been instrumental in engaging communities of color and young people. She created and ran PPFA’s Constituency Communications department that worked to engage and include the voices of underrepresented communities that are often left out of the conversation. She has been recognized on “The Root 100” list of influential Black leaders as well as a “Champion in PR” by PRWeek. And I could easily keep going! 🌿 What I love in particular is that she KNOWS the power of caring for our well-being. 💟 Because let’s be real…as women, in our pursuit of success, how often do we find ourselves going down a path where the trade-offs become too high, the personal cost, too great, and we are left feeling DEPLETED AND DRAINED? 🔍 Is this really the cost of success?! Is this what fulfillment looks like?! 🔍 ✨ It doesn't have to be. ✨ 🛤 Getting off this train of constant depletion doesn't mean giving up on our ambitions. It just means redefining them on our terms, finding balance, and making space for joy and well-being in our lives. It means creating a life that feels meaningful, holistic, and truly reflective of who we are. 51 years ago today, the Roe v. Wade decision was a victory for women's health and autonomy. It gave individuals the right to make their own choices about their bodies and futures. We must continue to fight to protect reproductive rights and access to healthcare for all people. A week ago we celebrated the life of MLK Jr. It is important to understand the connection between Black Civil Rights and Women's Rights. Historically, the movements for women's rights and black civil rights have fought for equality, justice, and freedom from oppression. Both have intersected in the fight for reproductive justice, equal pay, and an end to police/systemic brutality. Addressing these intersections is crucial for creating a more just and equitable society for all. I am thrilled to announce my acceptance into the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Class of 2024! Founded by President Bill Clinton in 2007, CGI U is a vibrant community of students dedicated to addressing the most pressing challenges facing our campuses, communities, and the world. Over the years, more than 12,500 students have made a significant impact across 160 countries and all 50 states, supported by over $4.8 million in funding from CGI U's corporate and university partners. As part of CGI U's year-round program, I am focusing on an initiative called EmpowerHER. This comprehensive initiative tackles the urgent problem of restricted availability of reproductive healthcare and education, especially in underprivileged areas impacted by restrictive laws and insufficient resources. EmpowerHER seeks to enhance the agency and self-determination of women by providing them with comprehensive information, essential resources, and necessary assistance to make well-informed choices about their reproductive health. EmpowerHER focuses on places where women encounter significant obstacles in obtaining comprehensive reproductive healthcare and education, particularly low-income individuals, women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those residing in rural or neglected locations. The initiative aims to provide an easily accessible online platform for reproductive health information, resources, and support services. Additionally, it will coordinate seminars and educational initiatives in partnership with community organizations, schools, and healthcare providers to offer inclusive sexual education. The project also undertakes legal advocacy initiatives to promote laws that protect and enhance women's reproductive rights and create peer support networks and mentoring programs. EmpowerHER's unique approach combines digital technology, community engagement, and legal advocacy to empower women and foster fairness and independence in reproductive health choices. I am excited to make a meaningful difference through this incredible opportunity and look forward to collaborating with fellow students, alumni, and influential voices. #CGIU2024 #CommitmentToAction #ImpactLeadership
