Proxy metrics assess outcomes when direct measurement can't be done. Correlating measurements directly to business outcomes is often a challenge in design. Sentiment, feelings, reactions, and usability clarify Design KPIs, but are not directly attributable to a business KPI. We enjoyed the Meta Analytics team article highlighting the difficulties of directly measuring key outcomes due to high costs, resource demands, and time constraints. To address these challenges, teams often use proxy metrics. Check out their article: https://lnkd.in/eQVd2VQD Proxy metrics can help answer these example research questions: → What impact, if any, does a new feature have on brand sentiment? → Does a new AI technology change the prevalence of specific kinds of content viewed on our platforms? → Does a new feature cause any changes in long term behavior? While their approach is detailed and a very structured way to consider proxy metrics, it helps avoid erroneous decisions. Meta developed the "experimentation with modeled variables playbook" (xMVP), which provides guidelines for assessing the maturity and reliability of proxies, evaluating assumptions and biases, and validating proxy performance against ground truth. The xMVP playbook emphasizes that proxies should be seen as qualitative indicators, alerting teams to potential effects rather than providing precise quantitative estimates. By using the playbook, teams can use proxies to inform decisions without fully replacing ground truth measurements. We all have bias. Clearly I love starting my presentations by stating the obvious. Bringing the year to a perfect close I had the lovely opportunity to present my talk about biases in the digital landscape on a recent members call for Boye & Company. Why is it so important to create an inclusive digital landscape? I introduced the cause and roots of bias in tech and society. To understand the effect and and lack of progress we looked at some recent examples for AI bias in healthcare and tech. To end on an encouraging note I shared practical strategies and actions to prevent discriminative patterns and behaviours. A lot of great questions came up from the members, and we endet up having a great exchange about legislation, personal accountability and education. I'd love to continue the conversation!
