Are you a tugboat or a lighthouse? 🤔 I always use this analogy when speaking to some of my team - "Are you a Tugboat (follower) or a Lighthouse (Leader)?" But after doing more research, I found some interesting insights into the 'tugboats' role... The tugboat forcefully guides ships to the harbour, much like some people who push, convince, and manipulate others to achieve their goals. We’ve all experienced—or perhaps been—the tugboat, pushing someone toward what we think is best. But as the old saying goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." On the other hand, the lighthouse stands firm and shines brightly, illuminating the path without direct intervention. It allows each ship’s captain the freedom to navigate based on the light provided - and shall we say, the lighthouse reminds them of the direction, even when times get a little rough...🤔 I then realised that perhaps I was using it in the wrong context, but am I? I guess it depends on how you want to be seen, or lead your team and people around you. For me, the 'lighthouse' approach is a more empowering way to interact with others. Instead of forcing actions, we can inspire and lead by example. In both personal and professional realms, I've found the lighthouse approach to be far more effective. By being authentically ourselves and providing a clear, consistent example, we allow others the space to make their own choices and grow. Certainly, in my experience, the lighthouse method fosters a deeper, more genuine connection and respect 💪🏼 So, which one would you prefer —a tugboat or a lighthouse?

January 2024 marked my 16-year anniversary in the railroad industry. I don’t typically dwell on the past, but a message from a friend who started this journey with me had me reminiscing on the path taken and the individuals that impacted me along the way. Today, the operating and safety side of the railroad is unrecognizable from what it was when I started my career. There have been countless safety initiatives implemented throughout my years. From “safety minded” to “safety focused” to “sending everyone home the way they arrived” to my favorite “safety culture.” The intentions behind all of these were in line with where the industry wanted to be at the time. From my perspective, the leader behind each initiative was what made for a success or a failure, or in some cases, nothing at all. I have been fortunate to work with many impactful leaders across the industry. The experience I’ve gained, along with the lessons and knowledge that I received from mentors and colleagues is what wrote the operating manuals for Crooked River Railroad. And we are evolving just like the industry always will be. It truly does start with having the right people in the right positions. Trusting your team to make the right decisions is easy when your team shares the same vision. Today, we celebrate a team dedicated to making those right decisions every time…Crooked River Railroad // 3-Year Injury Free

Z clients, 3rd project, Senior officers are on round, and won't get to work, informed the junior officer. 👨⚖️And the teamleaders said, Thank God, we were worried as the teams were falling short. We celebrate Terje Dyrseth: 48 years at Brunvoll! 🎉 We mark the end of an era as Terje Dyrseth retires after nearly five decades at Brunvoll. Terje has been a key figure in the company's success story, an invaluable resource, and an inspiration to us all. ❓ How did your career at Brunvoll actually start, Terje? Why did you choose Brunvoll back then? 👨🏻🔧 What happened was that I married a girl from Molde while I was in the Navy and living in Bergen. In 1975, I was working on training technical personnel on submarines, a job I enjoyed very much. We visited Molde to celebrate May 17th in 1975 and met Ottar Brunvoll by chance. He asked me if I wanted to move to Molde and work with him, and when I said no, he spent the entire summer persuading me until he got his way. I started as a sales engineer that fall. ❓ What are the highlights of your nearly 50 years at Brunvoll? 👨🏻🔧 It's impossible to single out highlights because there have been so many. However, I especially remember my significant projects as a sales manager, which set the standard for future assignments in segments like marine vessels and cruise ships. In 1997, when I was marketing manager, one of our sales engineers sold the idea of a retractable tunnel thruster to Statoil Shipping, which we didn't really know how to make, and then he came to me afterwards to ask how we should solve that puzzle. Together with skilled engineers, we figured it out! There has always been an optimistic innovation attitude with us – we've never done it before, so we can surely manage it, a bit of a Pippi Longstocking attitude. Moving the Brunvoll factory from downtown Molde to the new buildings at Årø and the construction of the Brunvoll quarter has also been very fun. These construction projects have created some Brunvoll footprints in Molde that I'm very proud to have participated in. ❓ If you look into the crystal ball, what do you think Brunvoll can expect in future years? 👨🏻🔧 It's tough to predict, but we know what we're doing, and everything has been done right so far. Focusing on dynamic positioning and automation will be incredibly important for us moving forward. The Brunvoll ship is a real armoured ship, and we have good steering speed ahead. As long as there are ships, the world will need propellers. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Terje 💙 👏 #retirepent #PeopleofBrunvoll #Legacy #Marineindustry

Learning to maneuver a yacht in port, in different conditions, and different situations, is critical to “master” the ship. Here is the new owner of “Lady Magellan”, approaching the dock.
