In 2024, international business trends within the packaging industry are evolving rapidly, with several key drivers shaping the future: 1. Sustainability and Circularity: There is a major focus on minimizing environmental impact through reducing packaging materials, increasing recyclability, and encouraging circular economy practices. Innovations such as reusable packaging, lighter materials, and labelless designs are becoming more prominent, particularly in food and beverage sectors. 2. E-commerce Growth: The continued rise of online shopping is driving demand for durable, protective, and sustainable packaging solutions. Consumers are increasingly looking for eco-friendly options, with a preference for reduced, recyclable, and reusable materials. 3. Digital and Smart Packaging: Technologies such as QR codes and NFC are being used not only for consumer engagement but also to encourage responsible behavior, such as improved recycling efforts. Digital labeling is also gaining traction to communicate sustainability information. 4. Paperization and New Materials: The shift from plastics to paper-based materials and innovative alternatives like fiber and seaweed are helping companies reduce their reliance on conventional plastics while improving sustainability. 5. In addition to paper-based alternatives, bioplastics are emerging as a viable solution in the packaging industry for reducing reliance on traditional plastics. Derived from renewable sources such as corn starch, sugarcane, and potato starch, bioplastics offer several advantages, including reduced carbon emissions and the potential for compostability under industrial conditions . Bioplastics can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as bowls, lids, and flexible packaging, and they often provide the same durability as conventional plastics while being more environmentally friendly. Although still facing challenges in scalability and cost, bioplastics are increasingly being integrated into packaging solutions alongside paper-based alternatives, particularly as companies seek to meet sustainability goals . This combination of paperization and bioplastics provides businesses with versatile options to reduce their environmental impact while maintaining performance and functionality.

SCHOTT launches pilot projects on glass-ceramics and specialty glass for a more circular economy - Technology Group launches pilot projects on recycling cooktop panels and pharmaceutical packaging - The circular economy a joint challenge for policymakers and the specialty glass industry - Vision: To reintegrate more used products into the production process in an ecologically and economically sensible way The ambitious goal of becoming the world’s first climate-neutral specialty glass manufacturer by 2030 is being followed by the next mission: SCHOTT also wants to lead the way as a pioneer in the transition to a circular economy. The technology Group has launched its first recycling projects in order to gain important experience. Together with pilot customers and partners,SCHOTT is systematically exploring ways to return used glass-ceramic cooktop panels and pharmaceutical packaging to the production of new products. Besides the technical challenges, it is primarily the lack of a legal framework that stands in the way of a circular economy. Up until now, there have been no special regulations that allow specialty glass to be collected by type. SCHOTT is taking the lead in this area and would first like to provide technical proof with the pilot projects: The recycling of used materials would also be possible on a large scale.“ SCHOTT is continuing its transformation into a sustainable company. That is why we have now launched our first projects to enter the circular economy. https://lnkd.in/dtu-ZAnz
