In my role, I've had the privilege of working closely with ex-military professionals, not only highlighting the immense value they bring to the table but also aiding them in effectively showcasing their skills on their CVs. 🎗️ Military backgrounds are a treasure trove of skills, leadership, and resilience, but sometimes decoding that brilliance for civilian roles can be challenging. 🛡️ To bridge the gap, it's crucial for veterans to "translate" their experiences into language accessible to HR and senior management. 🗣️ One common pitfall is assuming that everyone understands the intricacies of military roles, units, and responsibilities. 💼 I often find that CVs can be overlooked because the reader might not immediately grasp how a specific unit or role relates to the civilian positions they're hiring for. So, here's the golden rule: clarity is key. ✨ Break down your military experience into transferable skills and achievements. Show how your leadership in a combat zone can translate to effective project management, or how your strategic planning aligns with corporate objectives. 🚀 Understanding where your skills can be best utilised is equally crucial. 🎯 Narrow down your job search by recognising the industries and roles where your unique strengths shine. This not only streamlines your efforts but also ensures you're targeting positions that align with your expertise.

My view, so far on Transitioning from a military career to the civilian sector can be a transformative and rewarding Many veterans find that their extensive experience in project management, logistics, and operations management is directly applicable to various industries. However, it's essential to articulate these skills in a way that resonates with civilian employers. This might involve tailoring your resume to highlight relevant experiences, obtaining additional certifications, or leveraging networking opportunities to bridge the gap between military and civilian terminology. As I am living it right now , expect a period of adjustment as you navigate new professional and social dynamics. The civilian job market may present a different pace and set of expectations than what you're used to. Patience and persistence are key during this transition. Engage with veteran support programs, mentorship opportunities, and professional development resources to ease this process. By staying proactive and open to learning, you can successfully transition and thrive in your new civilian career, bringing a unique and valuable perspective to your new role.

In the aftermath of a job rejection, Army Sergeant, Charlie Chuckleblast, armed with an illustrious ex-military background, sought clarity from the recruiter after an unsuccessful job application. Sergeant Chuckleblast: "My experience aligns with your requirements. Why the rejection?" Recruiter: "While your military history is impressive, there's a lack of evident project management understanding on your CV”. Undeterred, Sergeant Chuckleblast insisted, "I possess crucial project management skills." Intrigued, the recruiter queried, "Why not highlight this on your CV?" Sergeant Chuckleblast could have spotlighted a myriad of relevant skills honed in the military – strategic planning, resource allocation, crisis management, and leadership under pressure. However, in failing to tailor his application to the specific role, “a dynamic and results-driven ex-military Sergeant with a track record leading teams in dynamic and multicultural environments, adept in training, coaching blah blah blah 💤 💤 ain’t going to cut it — he missed the opportunity to bridge the gap between military expertise and corporate needs. This fictional (but too often, realistic) scenario serves as a reminder of the pitfalls of not customising one's application to highlight the direct relevance of skills, potentially hindering a successful transition into civilian roles. #militarytransition #cv #skills #projectmanagement

Junior enlisted service members face a unique set of challenges when transitioning from the service - I would know. I left the service as a 21-year-old E5 after having led soldiers through all the conditions you could imagine; however, I was at an awkward crossroads between a lack of private-sector experience and education and having a taste of real-world leadership experience. It took some time, mentorship, and effort on my part to bridge that gap, but once I did, I found my service to be a professional propellant. That journey inspired the founding of Boots to Books, and today we are delighted to announce the pilot of a program designed specifically for junior enlisted service members. The Boots to Books JET-P, or Junior Enlisted Transition Program, will provide a professional certification, resume and interview assistance, networking opportunities, and guidance in the job search at no cost whatsoever to transitioning service members between the ranks of E1 and E5. The application is live now, and the link can be found at the bottom of the attached image. Recipients will be expected to devote ~2 hours per week over eight weeks to study and pass their certification, optimize their resume and interview, and complete networking calls. If successful, we plan to grow this program from a pilot of three initial recipients to a quarterly Boots to Books program helping hundreds annually. So - help us spread the word! If you are a senior leader, tell your formation! Drop a comment, share with a unit that should know about this, and help us empower our fellow junior enlisted as they transition.
