The unique challenge of managing HR in startups has never been more apparent than in the current business environment, where employee well-being ranks high on just about every employer’s stated list of priorities. That said, some 4 in 10 startup owners in the U.K. consider it necessary or acceptable for employees to work beyond their contracted hours, with the figure rising to 45% among those businesses that are less than a year old, according to a survey of more than 500 entrepreneurs by Startups.co.uk. In this piece by Tony Case, we speak to Maria-Teresa Daher-Cusack of Health Assured, Chris Coussons, and Barbara Palmer of Broad Perspectives.

Some 4 in 10 startup owners in the U.K. consider it necessary or acceptable for employees to work beyond their contracted hours, pointing to the largely accepted reality of "always-on" startup culture. In fact, neither Brits nor Americans have any legal right to unplug after hours, lagging behind countries like France, Italy and Portugal. Though that could be changing. Can startups really put people first? I mean, really prioritize employee well-being OVER business objectives - Difficult but Doable? In well-established, profitable companies, focusing on people-practices feels more achievable. They have the resources: money, a dedicated HR team, redundancy in roles to ensure continuity, and established structures that allow space for employee-centric initiatives. (Now, whether they actually take care of their people or not is an entirely different matter - I am just pointing out that they have the environment and the resources to do so) Now, let us step into the shoes of a startup founder. In the early stages, before substantial funding kicks in, the challenges can feel overwhelming: 👉 Limited budgets often mean employees wear multiple hats, leaving little room for traditional HR support. 👉 Time constraints push founders to prioritize survival over culture-building. 👉 Resources to address individual employee needs or professional growth can feel like luxuries. Balancing the absolutely genuine needs of your team with the relentless demands of building a viable business creates a constant tug-of-war. In my own entrepreneurial journey, I have grappled with this paradox firsthand on many occasions: 〰️ Do I push for results today, even if it risks burnout tomorrow? 〰️ How do I motivate my team when there’s little to offer beyond vision and promise? 〰️ Can I afford to prioritize employee well-being when we’re chasing every client and every rupee? These questions don’t have easy answers, and like many startup founders, I have had to learn through trial and error (and I am still learning). Here are a few approaches that have worked for me: ✅ Be transparent: People appreciate honesty about challenges and progress, even in tough times. Obviously, this won’t work with every team member. Some will jump ship at the first sign of trouble. So, hiring becomes critical so as to get the right culture-fit. (Groan! - one more challenge) ✅ Offer skill-growth opportunities: Even if budgets are tight, helping employees develop skills can boost morale and loyalty. ✅ Create micro-culture elements: Small gestures like celebrating milestones, team rituals or offering flexible work arrangements can go a long way in enhancing employee engagement. ✅ Provide social recognition: Appreciate and celebrate good work done by your colleagues on official company channels like Blog, LinkedIn, Newsletter and others. What do you think? How do/should startup founders navigate this paradox, especially during early stages? Let’s discuss! 👇 #progrowthpeoplesolutions #founderchallenges #humanresources #peoplefirst #businessgrowth

5 unique HR challenges startups face (...and how they differ from established companies) 🚀 Startups are the lifeblood of innovation. 💡 But with rapid growth and limited resources, they face distinct HR challenges that established companies don't. 🏢 Here are 5 key HR hurdles startups must navigate: 1️⃣ Tight budgets — Startups often operate on shoestring budgets. This means they can't match the salaries, benefits, and perks of larger companies. It's a constant balancing act between attracting top talent and managing costs. 💸 2️⃣ Hypergrowth — Startups are expected to scale at lightning speed. HR teams are under immense pressure to hire and onboard new employees rapidly. This can lead to rushed decisions and inadequate training. ⚡ 3️⃣ Evolving culture — Unlike established companies with ingrained cultures, startups are still defining their identity. Communicating a clear vision and values to potential hires can be challenging when things are in flux. 🌱 4️⃣ Compliance risks — Startups may lack the expertise to navigate complex employment laws. Without proper resources, they can unknowingly open themselves up to legal issues down the road. ⚖️ 5️⃣ Retention struggles — Limited resources and high-pressure environments can quickly burn out startup employees. Turnover tends to be higher than at established companies with more robust support structures. 🔄 But it's not all bad news for startups. 🌟 What they lack in resources, they make up for in opportunity. Employees get the chance to make a real impact, grow with the company, and be part of something exciting from the ground up. 🌍 These unique selling points can be a magnet for talent looking for more than just a paycheck. 💼 So while the HR challenges faced by startups are complex, they also offer unique rewards. After all, every established company started somewhere. 🌟 With the right strategies, startups can overcome these hurdles and build thriving teams that drive their success. 🚀

Building HR in a Bootstrapped Startup: Where to Focus First? Imagine this: you’re a founder with a dream, a small but passionate team, and a million things on your plate. Product launches, customer calls, fundraising—it all feels urgent. Amidst the chaos, HR often takes a backseat. "We’ll deal with it later," you tell yourself. Until one day, it hits you: your startup is growing, and without the right people and structure, you’re steering into chaos. This is where many founders find themselves. So, how do you start building HR when resources are tight and every decision counts? Here’s what we have learned from working with startups: 1. Hire for Culture, Not Just Skills In the early days, every hire is a cornerstone of your startup’s identity. Focus on bringing in people who share your vision and values. Skills can be learned, but cultural alignment? That’s what will drive your team forward. 2. Set Up Basic Policies You don’t need a massive employee handbook—just a few essential policies like leave, workplace conduct, and confidentiality, Recruitment & Performance Management. This will fuel to your HR growth 3. Build Trust, Not Bureaucracy Keep it simple. Focus on open communication and regular check-ins instead of rigid processes 4.Think Big While Starting Small Lay the groundwork for scalability. Maybe it’s using an affordable HR tool for tracking leaves or MIS or outsourcing payroll to a third party. As your team grows, these small steps will become the strong roots of your HR foundation. Here’s the big picture: HR isn’t just about policies or compliance. It’s about building a team that’s inspired, supported, and ready to scale with your vision. 🚀 Founders and leaders: What’s been your biggest HR challenge as you scale? We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! 👉 Ready to lay the groundwork for a thriving team? Let’s talk! #startups #HRforstartups
