Our SE Michigan team had a rewarding day volunteering at the Downtown Detroit Urban Farm! In support of a Soup Kitchen, they spent their time picking tomatoes and enjoyed fresh pears straight from the tree. Despite the intense heat, it was a great experience contributing to their work in a meaningful way.

You’ve likely heard of various slides: playground, water, and even the Cha Cha Slide! But the academic slide? That’s one we aim to avoid, especially come summer. The key to promoting summer learning is simpler than you might think. Engaging in activities like fruit picking, animal shelter volunteering, or simply enjoying nature provides rich learning opportunities. Let’s make this summer a blend of relaxation, fun, and learning, helping your students move smoothly into the next academic year. I like this list. I would add that something else that St. Louis does really well is Rally. Some examples of this: Neighbors – Although we have our flaws, STL sure showed out to support more than 1,200 Afghan refugees that have come to the area since 2021. STL's growth has been bolstered by refugees and it is great to see STL churches and NGO’s like Oasis International Ministries and the International Institute of St. Louis Rally around this effort. Philanthropy – The city can sure Rally around a good cause. This is shown by STL being traditionally ranked highly as an area strong in charitable giving. Fidelity Investments’s “2023 Geography of Giving” ranked STL #1 in “Local Charity Support”. This is reflected annually on Give STL Day, where the community rallies around local charities. Squirrels – We can sure Rally around a squirrel. If you know, you know. Symbols of Us – Whether it is the Arch, a River, our Flag, a Toasted Ravioli, March 14th or a Band Aid on your cheek, STL sure loves to Rally around symbols of us. #STL is not a perfect place and even we (St Louisans) are quick to point that out. Being Midwesterners, we don’t celebrate what we do well enough. Nice to see a story Rally around The Lou! https://lnkd.in/gEbag92z

How important appreciation is to me Over appreciation and under appreciation. There's this culture where appreciation or gratitude is a form of weakness. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After two months of volunteering for a building project, Ella was happy to have been involved in the project. The opening ceremony for the new structure came along and the major sponsor was calling names of people that worked on the building. Benefit of the doubt, let's say he forgot to appreciate Ella. She was broken. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Her feelings are very valid. Nobody wants to be that under appreciated person but at the same time we find it difficult to appreciate other people. Working hard and expecting appreciation is not an anomaly. Do not let anyone tell you any different. Be ready to appreciate people for their work.

Leadership Development Subject Matter Expert | TEDx: Conflict is the Contagion of Leadership | Leadership Coach, Consultant & Speaker | Transforming Leaders, Businesses, Schools, & Organizations
"I'm early in my career, and I believe the most valuable thing I can bring to the table is my energy and passion for growth." This is something I see often. But how do you channel that energy into something meaningful, especially when seeking mentorship? Here’s what I’ve learned: it’s not about what you can offer on the surface, but about connecting with what truly matters to the person you want to learn from. Imagine this: You want an executive at your dream company to mentor you. Instead of leading with what you can do for them, start by understanding what they value. Maybe they’re passionate about a nonprofit or volunteer at an animal shelter. Find a way to tie your goals to their passions. For example, “I want to grow my career and make a difference, just like you do by supporting animal shelters.” Now, you’re not just another person asking for time; you’re someone who resonates with their values. This is how you transform a simple request into a meaningful connection. 🌟 How do you align your goals with the values of those you want to learn from? Share your thoughts below! 👇 #PersonalGrowth #LeadershipDevelopment #TransformationalLeadership

Oh how I love an elegant, effective, FUN system 😻 My son and I started volunteering with the kitties at Our Companions Animal Rescue and Sanctuary (amazing facility!) and, as an organizational nerd, I am IN LOVE with their system. Here's why: 1) It creates a win for ALL the stakeholders - The cats each get the attention they need, the volunteers know exactly how they can contribute the most value each day, the staff know how much attention each kitty needs so they can fill in gaps, and future owners get a pet that is well-adjusted and loved. 2) Its SIMPLE! - After interacting with a kitty, you move a magnet to indicate what kind of attention that kitty got: play, cuddles, or just a sharing-space visit. Volunteers that come later in the day can see who needs attention and what kind of attention they could most benefit from. 3) It solves the problem by putting connection and relationships at the forefront - Yes, litter needs to be scooped and floors need to be swept, but kitties (and humans!) thrive when their emotional needs are met. They need connection and love on THEIR terms. Some kitties want more play time, some want more pets, and some kitties just like when you're in the room, no touching, please. I bet we can all think of humans that fit each of those categories too! Deep, loving, trusting relationships are built by respecting each others needs and that only happens when our needs are clearly communicated AND honored. 4) The expectations are clear - If you get scratched, it's mostly on you. Each cat is given a level and a clear explanation of their likes and dislikes. As long as you respect them, they will respect you. The staff has made it abundantly clear how you can create a win-win experience going into each kitty's room. Every part of the system is an "of course". Nothing is asking too much of the volunteers, the communication is respectful and clear, and the best interests of the cats, the volunteers, and the staff are all taken into account. That's how you build a good system 😽

Here’s another familiar face! Today we are spotlighting Harriet Simand as part of #VolunteerAppreciationWeek! Harriet is a retired teacher who loves gardening, travelling and dogs. 1. How long have you volunteered with Evergreen? This is my third year as a tour guide! 2. What inspired you to volunteer with Evergreen? I love the site, the nature and the historic buildings. I love feeling like I am in nature even though I am in the middle of the city. 3. Tell us about your roles and impact as a volunteer. I am a tour guide for public and private tours. I also volunteer for different festivals and the craft club. I love meeting the public and sharing the unique history of Evergreen Brick Works with them. I have been coming here for years and had no idea about its history! 4. What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Evergreen Brick Works? I love interacting with the public, especially kids, and spending time with my fellow tour guides who are so much fun to hang out with. 5. What’s the most important thing that you’ve learned from volunteering? Interacting with people in nature makes everyone happy. 6. Why do you think access to green public space is important? We live in a big city with lots of buildings and concrete. We often overlook the ravines and the plants and animals who live there. You can feel part of nature even if you live in a big city.
