The Australian mining sector is renowned for its rigorous physical safety standards, yet the evolving understanding of workplace health hazards is bringing psychosocial risks into the limelight. Recognising the impact of factors like long work hours, isolation, and demanding shift work, the industry is now starting to commit to enhancing the mental and emotional well-being of its workforce. Kanae Dyas, Anglo American's workplace support manager, emphasises the need for a holistic approach: "We need to ensure the very systems and approaches applied are not placing people at further harm and disempowering them; hence building capability of the organisation and leaders with training, trauma-informed practice, demonstrable psychological and cultural safety, coupled with proven health and wellbeing strategies and return-to-work processes." La baisse de 44 % du prix du nickel sur 12 mois amène actuellement à des fermetures de mines et des pertes d'emplois chez nos voisins. Néanmoins la diversité de l'économie australienne ainsi que leur taille leur permettront de survivre et mieux rebondir que nous. Avec une toute petite population active, des caisses vides et une quasi mono industrie, le défi est pratiquement impossible à relever pour la Calédonie sans l'aide massive de la France et de l'Europe. Alors, construisons notre pays différemment et arrêtons déjà de nous battre car les fondamentaux du nickel ont changé et ne pas s'adapter rapidement au nouveau contexte mondial imposé par une alliance Indonesie-Chine signifie simplement la fermeture de beaucoup de sites calédoniens sauf miracle! Le label "vert " du nickel calédoniens n'est pas suffisant pour survivre car eux aussi font des progrès en RSE même avec des coûts très bas!

A fourth report in the landmark study into mental health and workplace culture across Western Australia's mining sector has been released today. The Insights from the Worker Survey and Interviews report surveyed 2,550 WA mine workers to understand their perceptions of mental health awareness, respect and safety. Sixty further workers were interviewed one-on-one. A key strength of the industry was identified through the survey, being that most WA mining workers reported high levels of physical safety behaviours such as safety compliance and safety participation. The landmark study forms part of the Government's Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety Program, which was launched in December 2021. Curtin University Centre for Transformative Work Design is undertaking the four-year landmark study to gather and evaluate data to establish a baseline of current practices and experiences relating to the MARS Program’s three pillars: creating mentally healthy workplaces, building a culture of safety and respect, and preparing workplace safety in the future mine. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gd3Jn7Sf

Our team at the Centre for Transformative Work Design and Curtin University conducted a large-scale study in Western Australian mining to understand how we can better support this critical industry and their workers in: 🔎 Creating mentally healthy workplaces 🔎 Building a culture of safety and respect 🔎 Preparing for workplace safety in future mining Our research demonstrates that while there are clear areas of strength in the industry, such as through strong safety behaviours, there are also areas for improvement, such as high levels of burnout, and the pervasiveness of sexism and misogyny. 💡 More importantly, our research identifies the drivers which underlie these important outcomes. Findings suggest that working together to improve these drivers such as psychosocial safety climate and work design (amongst others!) can have strong positive impacts on mental health, a respectful culture, and safety - even amidst ongoing change. Research has shown the mining industry faces unique challenges which puts workers at a greater risk of mental health issues. Resourceful Mind is our specialist peer support program, specifically designed to equip individuals from the energy and resources sector in their workplace with the skills to become a peer supporter, or Minder, so workers have a designated person to seek help from when experiencing mental health challenges. Training around the disclosure of sensitive topics; financial stress and preventing mental health stigma, encourages workers to seek help before reaching a crisis point. This is an award-winning program which has seen 500 employees from 17 companies trained to support their colleagues since launching 18 months ago. The aim is to continue to increase the number of Minders in the workplace every year.
