Additionally, the poll found that American employees benefit from having access to mental health care coverage and need more help to understand and utilize what resources are available to them." IMPORTANT Guidance from Health and Safety Executive recently changed to emphasise employers’ responsibilities to take account of employees’ mental health in their first-aid needs assessment. Do your employees know what to do if someone clutches their chest in the middle of a meeting and seems to be struggling for breath. Is this a heart attack or perhaps a panic attack? Wouldn't it be wonderful if your physical first aiders also knew about mental health first aid? At Wellbeing in Work, we run open courses that your employees can join. Our next one is 15th/18th March and then 12th/19th April. Find out more by messaging me. #mentalhealthfirstaid #mentalhealthfirstaider #mentalhealthatwork

Thinking creatively about how to support mental health in the workplace, with a particular focus on men. Approx 1 in 4 in the UK will face a mental health challenge each year, yet according to Spill's 2024 Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) report, average EAP usage sits around 5%. These figures don't seem to match and even though this is a simplification, perhaps there are some issues with a business model that needs to limit usage of its platform to remain profitable. With men looking to be half as likely to access an EAP than women, do we need to be doing more things differently? Prevention is better than cure so how do we stop things escalating. Better workplace training is definitely part of this solution, but also targeted engagement strategies focused on commaraderie and mentoring might create better connections for men who feel isolated. Got some thoughts so watch this space! As I once read from a GP "A lot of issues could be resolved if I could write a prescription for a better manager"
