The Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Program is pleased to be supporting Suicide Prevention Australia in the development and implementation of a Suicide Prevention Competency Framework for the mining industry in Western Australia, which will be accompanied by an e-learning package comprising multiple educational modules for staff. The framework is being developed with the aim of assisting the mining industry in Western Australia to implement enhanced hazard elimination and risk mitigation tools and strategies within their communities. It will prioritise cultural accessibility and consider the diversity and inherent risks in this sector while, at the same time, considering the roles of all staff. Stakeholders will be asked to assist in the design of the Framework and e-learning packages. If you would like to participate or have further questions, please reach out to Sharon Bower at sharonb@suicidepreventionaust.org.
I've been watching the MARS program with interest since 2021. I support proven evidence-based initiatives to prevent rates of suicide In our industry, create mentally healthy workplaces and build a culture of safety and respect. My conscious bias of witnessing Mates in Construction evidenced-based approach, and training in WA workplaces since around 2009, and in more recent years in the Eastern states with Mates in Mining - with great success at mine sites EAP providers in WA will inform you of how many people working in mining go through their offices or seek online support due to adverse impacts to their health from toxic workplaces and leaders (?) in WA mining. Curious what positive cultural change in WA Mining have we seen in 3 years from the MARS program?
Much needed!
What an amazing initiative ❤️

2moThis is an incredibly important initiative, and I commend the MARS Program and Suicide Prevention Australia for taking this crucial step in supporting mental health and suicide prevention within the mining industry. The development of a Suicide Prevention Competency Framework tailored specifically for this sector is not just a necessary tool - it’s a lifeline. The mining industry faces unique challenges and risks, and having a framework that prioritises cultural accessibility and addresses these inherent dangers is vital for safeguarding the well-being of all workers. Mental health and suicide prevention are matters of profound importance, and by engaging the right stakeholders in the design of this framework, we can ensure it makes a real difference. I encourage those with relevant expertise, especially those who understand the unique pressures and challenges of the mining sector, to get involved. Your participation could save lives and contribute to a safer, more supportive work environment for all.
