The LSRCA's 2024 Contaminants Report is now online! We collected ~640 samples in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 to evaluate the concentrations of legacy and emerging contaminants in Lake Simcoe and its tributaries. 🚣♂️ 🚨 Highlights: 🚨 1. The LSRCA has not yet detected PFAS in water from Lake Simcoe or its tributaries (although we are still in the process of monitoring for PFAS). 2. DDT concentrations in the watershed have decreased below the detection limits of our tests, but its degradation products still exceed guidelines. 3. Heavy metal concentrations in sediments from Lake Simcoe's Kempenfelt Bay greatly exceed guidelines. Metal concentrations in the water are normal.

PFAS contamination poses a serious threat to humans and our environment. In the March episode of GEOTalks, Cíntia Miranda and I had the pleasure of speaking with Katrina Schweikert, a Ph.D. student from the University of Maine who is helping develop a geospatial knowledge graph for tracking PFAS contamination in the U.S. I wrote this blog for Blue Marble Geographics to provide some context about forever chemicals (PFAS) and introduce our listeners to the Safe Agricultural Products and Water Graph (SAWGraph). Here's the blog: https://lnkd.in/eBFEuEJV
Forever chemicals, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have been a hot topic in the U.S. since they were discovered in our farmlands and water sources. Katrina Schweikert is a Ph.D. student working on the SAWGraph, a geospatial knowledge graph that will help track nationwide PFAS contamination. Tune in for the episode tomorrow: https://ow.ly/SpGN50QWPSu
