We welcome Roberta Metsola's election as President of the European Parliament and look forward to working together with the newly elected Members of Parliament to ensure appropriate regulation for diverse forms of work and skills policies that help to address labour and skills shortages. Ensuring a human-centred approach to digitalisation and #AI will also be essential for the HR services industry. 🇪🇺 How will the EU’s shift to the right impact businesses operating in Europe? I had the pleasure of bringing together weeks of analysis within Flint’s EU2024 team into a concise blog post exploring this question. We examine the complex policymaking ahead, heightened uncertainty, and the likely rise of protectionism. 💬 Get in touch if you would like to discuss how Flint Global can help you navigate the new EU landscape.
The results of the EU elections earlier this month have confirmed a shift towards right-wing nationalist parties, which will complicate EU policymaking. In our latest blog, consultant Giacomo Borsetti looks at the impact of this shift to the right for businesses operating in the European Union. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/ekvuJJ3z Co-authored by: Gregor Kreuzhuber and Pepe López-Rúa Taboada

Finally in the #UKelection “Manifesto Week”, Labour publishes their plan for government which they hope will be enough to win power. They are making “change” the key theme of their campaign, and are hoping that this document will convince people that they are the change that is needed. There were no major new announcements, but we did see more details on some (but perhaps not all) of their priorities. Check out what the #ClarityUK public affairs team thinks and our deep dive into what the polls suggest will happen in the UK over the next 5 years. My analysis of the recent UK General Election results. The key takeaways are that electoral reform is badly needed - a Labour majority would have been unlikely on a party list PR system - but that there is now little incentive for it. This will also impact the legitimacy of major changes the new govt introduces.
We are pleased to share an in-depth report by Pravar Petkar, Head of the Strengthening Democracy Desk, on The Democratic Implications of the 2024 Labour Landslide. This analysis explores the significant impact of Labour's historic victory on the UK's democratic integrity and the challenges posed by the First-Past-the-Post system. The report examines the disproportionate representation resulting from the election, considers the potential benefits of various proportional representation models, and discusses the legitimacy and practical challenges of implementing major electoral reforms. This crucial analysis calls for a re-evaluation of the UK's electoral system to ensure it truly reflects the will of the people. What does May Day mean to you? For some, it is Labour Day/International Workers' Day - a celebration of labourers and the working classes. My Czechs and Slovaks celebrate it also as 'Lovers' Day'. It is a tradition influenced by the poem "May", by Karel Hynek Mácha which starts with "It was late in the evening, the First of May/The evening of May was a time of love." But today, the Czechs and Slovaks also celebrate the 20-year anniversary of their entry into the EU. I believe both countries benefited from the EU membership hugely, and are the best off compared to any time in history. Though, I do understand why a big part of society in these countries feels disillusioned about it. I also believe that the EU must improve and change. Now, ahead of the European Parliament elections and selection of a new European Commission next month, in ARTICLE 19, we came up with these recommendations on the key priorities for the incoming Commission’s mandate. If you are interested in finding out what EU we want, give it a read. My colleagues also wrote a series of op-eds on the topic which I highly recommend. For instance, check the piece Mark Dempsey did for the EUobserver, here: https://lnkd.in/gbK7iq8w. And happy May Day, whatever reason you celebrate it for! #EU #EuropeanCommission #freespeech #freedomofexpression #humanrights #transparency #MayDay #LabourDay #CzechRepublic #Slovakia #EUaccession https://lnkd.in/gkgWeT8C

For a party set to win the UK General Election, surprisingly little is known about Labour’s swathe of Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs). To better understand what is likely to shape the future direction of a Labour government, Penta has analysed the public views and campaigns of almost 150 of Labour’s PPCs throughout 2023 to gain an understanding of what will motivate them post-election. Penta’s analysis has identified a number of key areas where Labour PPCs diverge from the party’s leadership. We believe that these divergences are an important signal to what they will campaign on - and pressure the Labour Government on - if they are elected to Parliament on 4th July. Will your business in Europe be affected by the outcome of this election? Interested to read the report and analysis in full?
