The World Energy Council’s Insights tools are designed to best equip energy leaders to navigate the unprecedented challenges of modern energy systems. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE Sustainable Energy) recently held a dialogue on Carbon Neutrality and Scenario Building for the Republic of Moldova in collaboration with the World Energy Council. Utilising the UNECE’s carbon neutrality toolkit and our World Energy Scenario Foundations, the event explored the various pathways and strategies the Republic of Moldova could embark upon to transition its energy systems towards carbon neutrality. Thank you to the many participants of this important dialogue, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Moldova, the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in the Republic of Moldova, the Institute of Power Engineering of the Technical University of Moldova, and UNECE. 👉 Find out more about our scenarios work here: https://lnkd.in/gT5dsMT4 #decarbonisation #energysystems #energytransition #worldenergyscenarios #carbonneutrality

Deal or no deal? In the coming days the European Council will discuss what should be the strategic priorities in the next EU mandate from 2024-2029. Along with more than 500 cross-sector organisations, we are urging EU leaders to confirm the Green Deal as a strategic priority in the next EU mandate in a joint statement. The EU Green Deal is the foundation of a competitive, secure, modern, and efficient Europe. Our request is to prioritise decarbonising heat and to increase the share of renewable heat sources such as geothermal. This not only helps in achieving climate targets but also significantly contributes to energy security, competitiveness, and value creation in the EU. Let’s not gamble on our future, let’s build it. 🌍⚡️ Latest Energy News Update! ⚡️🌍 We're excited to share some significant developments in the European energy sector: 1️⃣ European Coalition for Energy Efficiency Financing: The European Commission launched this coalition to boost investments in energy efficiency and meet the EU's Green Pact goals for 2030 and 2050. Collaboration among Member States, financial institutions, and the Commission is key to creating an investment-friendly framework, as emphasized by Commissioner Kadri Simson. 🌱💶 2️⃣ “Shedding Light on Energy in Europe” Report: The 2024 report reveals the EU produced 37% of its energy and imported 63%. Renewables lead the energy mix at 43%. Oil and petroleum products dominate imports at 63%, and petroleum products make up 37% of final energy consumption. 🔋 3️⃣ Climate-Neutral Buildings by 2050: EU MEPs approved plans to reduce energy consumption and emissions from buildings, aiming for climate neutrality by 2050. New buildings must be zero-emission by 2030, and fossil fuel-based heating systems will be phased out by 2040. Exemptions are planned for agricultural and heritage buildings. These initiatives highlight the EU's commitment to a sustainable and energy-efficient future. 🌱🔋🏠 #EnergyNews #SustainableEnergy #GreenFuture #EUInitiatives #RenewableEnergy #EnergyEfficiency #ClimateAction

The national energy and climate plans (NECPs) outline how the EU countries intend to address the 5 dimensions of the energy union: - decarbonisation - energy efficiency - energy security - internal energy market - research, innovation and competitiveness This approach requires a coordination of purpose across all government departments and it provides a level of planning that will ease public and private investment. EU countries are required to submit their final updated NECPs by 30 June 2024, taking into account the Commission's recommendations and individual assessments.

⚡️ State of the Energy Union 2024: Key Findings and Future Directions 🔍 The State of the Energy Union published by the European Commission yesterday shows that, in 2022, the EU saw a notable decrease in primary energy consumption, falling by 4.1%, signalling a positive trend towards our climate goals. However, to meet the ambitious target of an 11.7% reduction in final energy consumption by 2030, the EU must ramp up its energy efficiency efforts. The report rightly underscores the urgent need to prioritise energy efficiency as a cornerstone of EU policy. In the coming years, it will be crucial to continue advancing the implementation of the Fit for 55 package and to address the forthcoming challenges for the Energy Union, notably in the Clean Industrial Act. Despite these priorities, recent discussions and reports have not sufficiently highlighted the role of energy efficiency, which will be a pivotal element in reaching EU climate goals and in enhancing EU competitiveness and energy security. Focusing on energy efficiency is and will be essential for paving the way towards a sustainable and secure energy future. 🚨 SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT! 🚨 We are excited to introduce Alexandre Affre, Deputy Director General of BusinessEurope, the leading voice for growth and competitiveness at the European level. Alexandre will share insights from their latest study on the energy and climate transition. 🌍 The report stresses the urgent need for a significant scale-up in renewable and low-carbon energy to close the energy price gap between the EU and third countries and reach climate neutrality. However, it also reveals that European energy prices will likely remain structurally higher than those of international competitors, emphasizing the need for additional policy measures to safeguard the competitiveness of European industry. Key recommendations include: 👉 Massively increase the deployment and integration of all renewable and low-carbon energy sources 👉 Close the investment gap 👉 Secure the hydrogen value chain 👉 Introduce measures to close the energy competitiveness gap 👉Foster industrial decarbonization through effective demand-side measures Don't miss out on this opportunity to hear from Alexandre Affre at the 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭. Yesterday, @Institute of Development Studies, we explored the topical issue of opposition and resistance to clean energy transition. We broadly focused on several themes including the increasing and uneven burden of the cost of investment in clean energy. My discussion focused on the effect of clean energy transition on those phasing out industries, largely drawing from my ongoing work in Africa. The event was recorded and if this is something of interest to you, here is the link to the discussion https://lnkd.in/exktNX4r
