As the recent leak of the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships briefing book anticipated, EU international cooperation strategy is betting everything on #GlobalGateway. However, is this strategy aligned with the objectives of European international cooperation to reduce inequalities, promote sustainable development and human rights in partner countries? 🤝  In its latest report, @CONCORD Europe interviewed local communities and civil society organisations in El Salvador and Lesotho to assess the impact of #GlobalGateway projects, focusing on the key issue of reducing inequality globally. 💡 Although the project aims at social inclusion and bridging gaps, the absence of clear strategies and tools to target the most marginalised groups calls into question the programme's ability to deliver on its stated ambitions. To prevent #GlobalGateway projects from contributing to exacerbating inequalities, CONCORD has generated a roadmap of recommendations to ensure projects reach those left furthest behind. 🗺 Read CONCORD's latest report to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gK_sQZhY

Important analysis. I am noting similarities and similar pitfalls in the Dutch policy for Aid and Trade. With a new radical right Dutch coalition cutting and polluting the ODA budget much more the #Netherlands shall be shifting the balance even more to self-interests, undermining genuine efforts aimed at reducing #poverty, extreme #inequalities and improving #humanrights, #womensrights, environmental protection and #climatejustice globally. This is a tendency for policies in many EU countries that fed and are feeding into EU policies & practices too. With a conservative European Commission the upcoming #EUelections likely will result in a further shift to the conservative and #farright in European Parliament too.

European mayors told us what their priorities are for 2024. ⬇ Tackling climate change is their top priority for the second year running, according to results from the #EurocitiesPulse Mayors Survey. Tackling the spiralling housing crisis and responding to rising social inequalities have also emerged as key priorities. 67% of mayors emphasise the importance of climate action, including working together on climate neutrality, implementing the #EUGreenDeal and investing in sustainable transport. Selected by 31% of mayors, tackling inequalities and supporting social inclusion is their second biggest priority. Key investments from city mayors include protecting people’s social rights in the green and digital transformations and responding to pressure on essential social services. Third in their list of priorities is tackling Europe’s housing crisis, with 30% mayors stating the need to invest in high-quality, affordable housing and to improve social housing.  These are some key findings of the second annual Eurocities Pulse Mayors Survey. In total, 92 mayors from 28 Eurocities countries responded to the survey, which provides an analysis of the major trends, challenges and priorities that shape urban affairs in 2024. Whom do Ibero-American citizens trust? Many citizens in this region feel they cannot trust their governments. In South America, 50% of citizens feel this way, and only 48% support democracy. In Spain and Portugal 68% and 49%, respectively, indicate distrust in their governments. (World Values Survey Data) According to Glocalities data, Gen Z is showing great potential when it comes to political engagement, particularly when policies align with their values. They are ready to take action and make a difference. Furthermore, the OECD Report on Public Communications (2021) highlights that increased citizen participation and involvement in public discussions and decisions can raise trust, strengthen accountability, and raise awareness about the results achieved by governments. By understanding public sentiment and actively involving citizens, we can make a significant impact on the path to a more sustainable future. We are excited to announce that Global Community Resourcing Director of Projects and Research Anne Livingstone has signed an international publishing deal for a forthcoming book on the crucial role standards can play in ageing societies. Collaborating with esteemed co-editors Ms Jeanne Bank from Canada and Dr Sabrina Pit, from Australia over the past year, they have turned this idea into a project slated for publication in 2025. The book brings together global experts to explore a diverse range of topics, including digitalisation, employment, economic participation, multigenerational committees, dementia-inclusive communities, wellbeing, financial security, and safety. Additionally, some chapters will address the more challenging and controversial aspects of achieving and implementing standardisation.
