We provided a submission to the Inquiry into Food Security in Australia which has recently released their extensive report. We were glad to see acknowledgement of the growing issue of food insecurity in Australia (including a reference to The Community's Grocer submission which noted we are seeing more people than ever at our markets), alongside the mention of many different levers to improve equitable access to food. We can see the importance of our work across many of the chapters and recommendations. We loved reading the following recommendations: - the Australian Government appoint a National Food Council covering sectors including access to food - the Australian Government conducts surveys of household food insecurity every 3 years - as part of the development of a National Food Plan, the Australian Government... * develop community projects designed to improve localised food systems and food security * facilitate the development of supply networks aimed at local production, procurement, distribution and sale of fresh and nutritious food * acknowledge community stores as an essential community service https://lnkd.in/dQEn_V27

As of 2022, more than half of Brazil's population was grappling with #food insecurity, with a staggering 33 million urban people facing severe #hunger issues. It disproportionately affects poorer communities living on the fringes of Brazil's brutally unequal cities, where poor #infrastructure makes it even harder to get food that is good, doesn't cost too much, and fits with the local culture. Our brief film sheds light on the research project "Engineering food: infrastructure exclusion and ‘last mile’ delivery in Brazilian favelas", a joint effort by The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Insper Instituto de Ensino e Pesquisa, and Birkbeck, University of London, funded by The British Academy. This project delves into the challenges of fresh food #supplychains to getting nutritious food to those who need it most in profoundly disadvantaged areas. The film includes conversations with researchers and local leaders in Brazil, highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic has deepened food scarcity and the innovative solutions communities are finding to combat hunger. It underscores the vital role women and community groups play in bridging the food access gap and calls for more support and investment in local initiatives to overcome food access disparities. Thank you, André Duarte, Mara Nogueira, Gareth Jones and Aiko Amaral for all the learning and great joint work together on this project.
