#DidYouKnow: The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (#SOFI) report warns that the world is falling significantly short of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (#SDG2), Zero Hunger, by 2030? The report, published by five United Nations specialized agencies including the World Food Programme, details that global hunger levels have remained high, with between 713 and 757 million people facing undernourishment in 2023—approximately 152 million more than in 2019. If current trends continue, about 582 million people will be chronically undernourished in 2030. Now, more than ever, WFP needs support to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition. Hunger is not just a personal struggle for those who experience it; it has a domino effect on communities and economies around the world. Financing for hunger assistance programs shouldn’t be considered a cost, but an investment in the long-term security of our global community. The release of the UN’s State of Food Insecurity (SOFI) report today is a stark reminder that we must urgently address the resource gap that prevents us from reaching #ZeroHunger. But this responsibility cannot fall on governments and development organizations alone- all sectors need to play a role in bridging the gap. By working together and pooling our resources, we can turn the tide and move closer to our vision of a world free from hunger. Until we take united action, this preventable crisis will continue. #zerohunger #nutrition #sofireport #foodinsecurity #collaboration https://lnkd.in/gP-xBbe9

"1 in 11 people worldwide faced hunger in 2023, 1 in 5 in Africa". In a recent State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report published by five United Nations specialised agencies, it was found that around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, equivalent to one in eleven people globally and one in five in Africa. The annual report, launched this year in the context of the G20 Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty Task Force Ministerial Meeting in Brazil, warns that the world is falling significantly short of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, Zero Hunger, by 2030. This year’s report’s theme “Financing to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition’’, emphasises that achieving SDG 2 Zero Hunger requires a multi-faceted approach, including transforming and strengthening agrifood systems, addressing inequalities, and ensuring affordable and accessible healthy diets for all. It calls for increased and more cost-effective financing, with a clear and standardized definition of financing for food security and nutrition. The World Food Programme (WFP) has recently released a set of indicators to determine the onset of a famine within a country/domain, as well as the food insecurity phases that precede a famine. According to the WFP, a food insecurity situation becomes a famine when at least 20% of households in that country/area face extreme food shortages; 30% of (resident) children suffer from acute malnutrition; and 2 people per 10,000 die from starvation, or disease combined with malnutrition. Around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, equivalent to one in eleven people globally and one in five in Africa, according to the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (#SOFI) report published today by five United Nations specialized agencies. The report shows that the world has been set back 15 years, with levels of undernourishment comparable to those in 2008-2009. Despite some progress in specific areas such as stunting and exclusive breastfeeding, an alarming number of people continue to face food insecurity and malnutrition as global hunger levels have plateaued for three consecutive years, with between 713 and 757 million people undernourished in 2023—approximately 152 million more than in 2019 when considering the mid-range (733 million). Regional trends vary significantly: the percentage of the population facing hunger continues to rise in Africa (20.4 percent), remains stable in Asia (8.1 percent)—though still representing a significant challenge as the region is home to more than half of those facing hunger worldwide —and shows progress in Latin America (6.2 percent). From 2022 to 2023, hunger increased in Western Asia, the Caribbean, and most African subregions. If current trends continue, about 582 million people will be chronically undernourished in 2030, half of them in Africa, warn the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN World Food Programme (World Food Programme), and the World Health Organization (WHO). This projection closely resembles the levels seen in 2015 when the Sustainable Development Goals were adopted, marking a concerning stagnation in progress.

With our world reaching a tipping point, it is imperative that the most basic of human rights -food security - should take precedence on world political and economic agenda. Climate change is exacerbating food scarcity around the world, it is a critical time that we should think about scientific and cultural mind shifts for access to food and nutrition.
Hunger is not just a personal struggle for those who experience it; it has a domino effect on communities and economies around the world. Financing for hunger assistance programs shouldn’t be considered a cost, but an investment in the long-term security of our global community. The increasing global food insecurity is a significant concern. Currently, 733 million people are dealing with food insecurity due to factors such as climate change, conflict, and economic instability. Worldwide, food systems have disparities in access, especially in low-income countries where many people cannot afford nutritious diets. Addressing these challenges requires urgent, coordinated global action and innovative solutions to tackle the root causes of hunger and malnutrition.

37 years working with the United Nations starting in Gaza and moving on to postings in Jerusalem, Vienna, Amman, Cairo and New York.
I have never expected to read such a damning report about what can be allowed to happen to a captive population under the watchful eyes of the entire world, what has happened to humanity? According to the new Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report released today, "in Gaza’s two northern governorates, where around 300,000 people remain trapped, famine is expected to arrive between now and May. The famine threshold for acute food insecurity has already been far exceeded, while acute malnutrition among children below five years is proceeding at record pace towards the second famine threshold. Non-trauma mortality – the final famine indicator – is accelerating, but data remains limited, as is typical in war zones. Overall, the new report shows that 1.1 million people in Gaza – half of the population – have completely exhausted their food supplies and coping capacities and are struggling with catastrophic hunger (IPC Phase 5) and starvation. This is the highest number of people ever recorded as facing catastrophic hunger by the IPC system, and double the number in IPC Phase 5 just three months ago. “People in Gaza are starving to death right now. The speed at which this man-made hunger and malnutrition crisis has ripped through Gaza is terrifying,” said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain. “There is a very small window left to prevent an outright famine and to do that we need immediate and full access to the north. If we wait until famine has been declared, it’s too late. Thousands more will be dead.”" United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had this to say this morning: "The latest report on food insecurity in Gaza is an appalling indictment of conditions on the ground for civilians. The world’s leading experts on food insecurity clearly document that famine in the northern part of Gaza is imminent. More than half of all Palestinians in Gaza –1.1 million people– have completely exhausted their food supplies and are facing catastrophic hunger. Palestinians in Gaza are enduring horrifying levels of hunger and suffering. This is the highest number of people facing catastrophic hunger ever recorded by the Integrated Food Security Classification system –anywhere, anytime. This is an entirely manmade disaster—and the report makes clear that it can be halted. Today’s report is Exhibit A for the need for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire. I call on the Israeli authorities to ensure complete and unfettered access for humanitarian goods throughout Gaza and for the international community to fully support our humanitarian efforts. We must act now to prevent the unthinkable, the unacceptable and the unjustifiable." https://lnkd.in/e4qbjMyS
