🌍💧 We are in a global water crisis. According to the United Nations, 50% of the world faces #water shortages yearly, affecting 4 billion people. By 2025, 1.8 billion will face absolute water scarcity. To preserve water we need genuine political commitment and increased financing to protect and restore natural spaces. 🌿 The EU #NatureRestorationLaw is a crucial step in this direction, setting targets to restore European natural ecosystems, including urban ecosystems.🌱 🔗 The summer issue of #LivingArchitectureMonitor is dedicated to water. In this issue Luigi Petito writes about water resilience, European projects and policies, including the recent adoption of the Natural Restoration Law: bit.ly/4bixRvy

🌍💧🌊#WorldWaterDay's awareness efforts are crucial, yet they must be complemented by #data-driven #policies and practical solutions to effectively tackle #globalwaterchallenges. 📢#WaterScarcity acknowledged, but requires localized solutions due to uneven distribution. #Pollution and #Sanitatio awareness is good; however, 💰investment in infrastructure and technology is needed for tangible improvements. #Water and #Peace equitable distribution can aid peace, but the complex #geopolitics of water disputes necessitates a careful approach. #Annual #Themes guide discussions but should be paired with case studies and actionable policies for real impact. #ScientificResearch #Sustainablewater #waterresourcesmanagement #Supportresearch.

Thank you for sharing this information about the #10thWorldWaterForum. The 10th World Water Forum website states: “In the midst of current population growth and climate change, I would like to emphasize several important agendas that must be prioritized, as follows: water conservation efforts; availability of clean water and sanitation; food and energy security; as well as mitigation of natural disasters such as floods and droughts.” https://lnkd.in/dPbkr9Nc The Forum brings together participants from all levels and sectors, including politics, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector. Therefore, it would be great if the organisers and participants of this forum would take the opportunity to set an example that there is no such thing as a natural disaster and help change the way organisations, politicians, the media and people in positions of power talk about disasters. The term 'natural disaster' is wrong and misleading. Building on decades of work and research by disaster risk reduction practitioners and academics, the #NoNaturalDisasters campaign aims to change the terminology to show that while some hazards are natural and unavoidable, the resulting disasters are almost always caused by human actions and decisions. https://lnkd.in/eWKppQYN #water #flood #droughts

Environmental justice in Texas water management 💦 Texas faces many water equity and sustainability challenges, most often burdening underserved and underrepresented communities. While some municipalities in Texas have incorporated equity and sustainability metrics in their climate action plans, many do not, which allows water availability issues to persist. Extreme weather and climate events, like flooding and hurricanes exacerbate the disparities. Margaret Cook, PhD, HARC’s Deputy Director for Climate Equity and Resilience, and Ryan Bare, PhD, HARC’s Senior Research Scientist and Nature-Based Solutions Program Manager, with collaborators, have published an article in the Texas Water Journal addressing policy and planning gaps persistent in environmental justice issues. 🤝 Last year, a key agreement was struck on the Nature Restoration Law. Now we call on the European Parliament to seal the deal! Over 1 million citizens, scientists, businesses, activists & NGOs urged the Parliament to adopt the long-awaited Nature Restoration Law. If we #RestoreNature and green our cities, we protect Europe and Baltic's citizens, economy and nature from climate change impacts 🌳 The Nature Restoration Law has already been adapted to address multiple concerns of the Parliament. The negotiators from the Council, Parliament and Commission reached a carefully negotiated deal. The restoration of Europe and Baltic’s rivers, forests or marine habitats will protect us from ever more threatening floods, droughts, wildfires and heatwaves. We call on the European Parliament to listen to 1 million citizens and support the agreement without any further changes! 🔍 Exploring Water Resource Management: A European and Brazilian Comparative Analysis In their 2021 study, Bettencourt et al. compare the water management models of the European Union and Brazil, focusing on how each system approaches the management of river basins. The study highlights both strengths and challenges in water governance, shaped by geographic, cultural, and political contexts. 🔹 Key Takeaways: Both regions use river basins as management units, promoting decentralized, participatory governance. The European model emphasizes strict ecological targets and short planning cycles, ensuring adaptability. The Brazilian model focuses on the economic use of water but faces challenges with longer planning cycles and less comprehensive monitoring. How can water management systems adapt to increasing water demand and resource scarcity? Are there best practices that could be shared between the EU and Brazil to address these issues more effectively? 🔗Article: https://lnkd.in/ew4cCJfQ 🌐 Subscribe: https://lnkd.in/gnhZTVjA #WaterManagement #Sustainability #EnvironmentalGovernance #RiverBasinManagement #PolicyAnalysis #Ecolonical
