👏 This measure marks a significant step towards ensuring lasting peace and stability in Oromia and beyond. However, thousands of political prisoners, journalists, and HRDs remain unlawfully imprisoned. The government must continue these efforts to ensure that the "national dialogue" and "transitional justice" processes become truly meaningful and effective, ultimately fulfilling the longstanding desire for sustainable peace, accountability, and justice within the country. https://lnkd.in/gvH5dSf3

Orly Erez-Likhovski writes after the fight against the corrupt Jobs for Ultra Orthodox Rabbis law was successful, for now... "In the face of the government’s reckless behavior, we will not stay silent. We will continue to raise a voice against corruption and discrimination and for transparency and fairness. We will call for sharing the military burden equally and for a fair distribution of resources, which aligns with our values of justice and equality." Read more! https://lnkd.in/diZZTe6u

Insightful conversations on the history, current challenges, and future of constitutionalism in Afghanistan were shared during today’s panel. I had the opportunity to emphasize the critical role of community-driven approaches, the importance of people’s agency, and the profound significance of fostering a sense of ownership in constitutional processes. It’s vital that constitutions reflect the voices and needs of the people they are meant to serve. Looking forward to continuing these discussions and exploring pathways for inclusive and sustainable constitutional reforms. #GenevaPeaceWeek2024 #Center for Dialogue and Progress (CDP-G) #Geneva Centre for Security Policy

In 2020, Keir Starmer vowed there would be ‘No more illegal wars’ under his Labour Party leadership. After a landslide election on 4 July, we call on the new prime minister and his government to change how the decision to go to war is made. As it stands, the UK Prime Minister can authorise going to war without consulting Parliament. Recent deployments of British forces overseas have occurred without prior debate or vote and have often been based on controversial legal justifications. To enhance democracy, ensure adherence to international law, and prevent extensive civilian harm, the UK should urgently strengthen democratic control over its war powers. Since the decision to go to war is made in everyone’s name, Parliament must have the power to say no and the right to access the full legal advice of the Attorney General and independent experts. 🔒🇺🇸 The 2nd Amendment: A Safeguard Against Tyranny 💪⚖️ At its core, the 2nd Amendment isn’t just about self-defense—it’s about protecting freedom. Here’s why it’s a critical pillar of democracy: 🛡️ Power to the People: An armed populace ensures that no government can impose unchecked power. It’s a reminder that true authority comes from the people, not the state. ⚖️ Checks and Balances: The 2nd Amendment is a safeguard that upholds the balance of power between citizens and their government, deterring any potential overreach or oppression. 🔍 Preserving Liberty: History shows that the ability to defend oneself is essential in resisting tyranny. Armed citizens are a constant barrier to any force seeking to strip away rights and freedoms. 📜 Freedom’s Last Line of Defense: The right to bear arms isn’t just a privilege—it’s a constitutional guarantee that preserves all other freedoms. The 2nd Amendment protects democracy by ensuring no one can take our liberty away! 🇺🇸💥 #2ndAmendment #Freedom #DefendLiberty #RightToBearArms #TyrannyDeterrent #Constitution #PowerToThePeople

Many think that the second amendment to the US Constitution is the real obstacle that thwarts any effort at gun control. It is. But the right to keep and bear arms had nothing to do, originally, with personal protection or freedom of choice. Instead, it was railroaded into the constitution by those who saw in a President and a strong central government the dark shadow of absolutism and tyranny. As such, it provided a sanction to take up arms in the defence of liberty, even at the cost of political violence and civil war. My piece in the Economic Times today on why this 233-year old amendment may be more relevant than ever in this election year. #secondamendment #billofrights #usconstitution #donaldtrump #civilwar #assassinations #unitedstates #july13 #economictimes
