45% of GHGs can only be tackled by changing what we make, sell and use. The circular economy is our secret weapon in tackling climate change. ♻️ We're working with major game changers to empower millions of consumers to make circular choices. Each year at least 1.3 billion metric tons of food is wasted globally. 🍌 We work with over a thousand businesses, governments and partners around the world to transform the global food system by shifting business practices and consumer behaviour. The world produces 141 million metric tons of plastic packaging a year. 🥤 We manage the global network of Plastic Pacts, which cover 1/3 of the world's coastline, together with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. 93 billion cubic meters of water is used by the textiles industry every year. 👕 We bring together key players across the fashion value chain to extend the life of clothes and promote sustainable material production. As we celebrate World Environment Day, I want to share a bit about our journey towards sustainability at Well Woven. Over the last two years, we've taken some important steps. We made our first investment in recycled yarns, which are now used in 20% of the products we sell. We've also moved to digital catalogs to reduce our reliance on print and boost our recycling efforts. In our warehouse, we're minimizing waste wherever we can by reusing materials. As a small business, these are small steps, but we're trying to do our part. It doesn't feel like enough, and we want to do more. On a personal note, living in NJ, one simple change that has opened my eyes over the last couple of years is reusing grocery bags. It's a simple but significant reduction in waste. We don’t need two plastic bags for every few items. Small efforts like this really matter. This year has brought unprecedented heatwaves across Asia, breaking records and highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices. Record storms in the US recently. It's also expected to get hotter in North America, which shows us how important it is to change. I don’t have all the answers, but I’m committed to learning and improving. It's about moving the needle, quarter by quarter, year by year. There’s much exciting work in the textile industry in Europe and worldwide, focusing on new and innovative yarns made from waste. While I haven’t followed this closely, I plan to engage more deeply with these advancements to bring innovative solutions to Well Woven. Our goal is to move towards a more sustainable future, step-by-step. Through continuous improvement and thoughtful decisions. #WorldEnvironmentDay #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #WellWoven

I am pleased to share my latest article on the urgent need for circular systems in the textile industry. Each second, a single truckload garments is landfilled or incinerated. Less than 1% of clothing undergoes recycling, while the majority is incinerated or discarded in landfills or the natural surroundings. Recognizing the potential to transition towards circular systems in this sector is crucial and will require enabling policy frameworks and investments but also collaboration across the value chain to ensure materials remain in circulation. Read the full article here: https://broadpeak.ch/blog This is the first article in our Circular Economy Trilogy covering circularity in the textile industry (article 1), in the plastics industry (article 2) as well as the global transition towards circularity (article 3). Recycle:me is expanding♻️ Our recycle:me scheme, which targets hard-to-recycle beauty packaging, is expanding with a goal of recycling one million units in the first year. This initiative helps brand partners offset new packaging waste fees under EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) regulations. In collaboration with LOOKFANTASTIC.COM, Cult Beauty, and MYGroup, customers can recycle any brand's cosmetic packaging for free via Royal Mail doorstep collection. The recycled materials will be repurposed for new projects, including beauty packaging R&D and school equipment. Mark Jones, Chief Sustainability Officer at THG, says, “For brands, recycling schemes are incredibly complex and costly. With recycle:me, we're offering our brand partners a cohesive industry approach that provides the level of data needed under new EPR regulations.” #WeAreTHG #Sustainability #RecycleMe

A great post by Nupur Saxena highlighting some alarming consumer and retail statistics on #EarthDay. The FMCG & Retail industry produce 36% of the 400m tonnes of plastic produced each year and by 2050 our oceans will have more plastic in them than fish... If only more businesses were doing more to address the issues. See below. #planetversusplastic #consumer #retail #sustainabilityinbusiness 🌍

By 2050, the oceans will have more plastic than fish. A frightening prediction made by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, leaders in circular economy. This year’s #EarthDay theme ‘planet vs. plastics’ is calling for a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040 and the elimination of single-use plastics. 400 million tons of plastic is produced globally every year. #Retail and #FMCG produce 36% of it. Our oceans are already filled with 165 million tons of plastic, 25 times heavier than the Great Pyramid of Giza. As consumers, doing our bit is important, because recycling makes up 73% of plastics collected from households. From a business perspective, there are purpose-led pioneers who are meeting the plastic challenge head on: 🩱PURSUIT THE LABEL take ocean waste (fish nets, plastic bottles, etc.) and turn it into luxury swimwear. 🐋Plastic Whale clean land and sea and then use the waste to create boats to go plastic fishing and create circular office furniture with Vepa the furniture factory. 💧Dopper have developed a sustainable alternative to single-use water bottles and lead global water projects that provide drinking water to millions around the world.
