On this World Water Day 2024, I wish to bring your attention to this aspect which I was advocating for the last two decades: Forests and Water. A long text, but please read fully. I am discussing the water issue beyond mismanagement of old and traditional water bodies that used to cater to the drinking water requirement of present day urban areas. Yes it's important that ponds/lakes need immediate restoration, but at the same time rivers of this country need immediate attention before they get dry. Now it's a known fact that all major urban areas are dependent on rivers for their drinking water purposes. 1. Indore- drinking water requirement is being attended by Narmada phase I, II, III and I am told phase IV is under way. 2. Bhopal - Initially it was Bhopal lake built on river Kolans, then Kolar dam built on river Kolar and now Narmada pipeline that are in vogue to drench the thirsty Bhopali. 3. Agra - water from River Chambal 4. Bangalore - water from River Kaveri 5. Chennai - water from river Krisha through Telugu Ganga Project 6. Entire Telangana - Project Bhageerath - lifting water from river Godavari (Kamleshwaram Project) 7. Ahmedabad - water from river Narmada and the list goes on.... From the above examples it's clear that our water dependency of major urban areas of the country had shifted to rivers. Even ecologically unsustainable river linking projects also coming up with an aim to meet out the drinking water requirements of human populations. One issue I would like to draw the attention of everyone who manages water is to try to address the issue of water flow in the rivers and their perenniability. Unless we address the issue of forested catchment the ground water recharge and perenniability of water flow in the rivers cannot be ensured. Hence my request/appeal to all planners of urban water management to include the maintenance of forested catchments of the rivers on whom the urban areas are dependent to meet out their water immediately.

Project Overview Name of work :- Repairing of damaged approach road and side drains at Pragjyoti Bhawan, SIB Office, Guwahati Timeline: We initiated this project in March 2024 and successfully completed it in June 2024, spanning approximately three months. Previous Condition: The road was originally made of bituminous material and had become very old. During summer, water tankers used this road to fulfill the water needs of the adjacent residential society, causing the road to become deformed. Both the road and the drainage system alongside it were severely damaged. During the rainy season, it was extremely difficult for residents to use this road, as it would flood and the broken drainage system exacerbated the issue, making access to the main road nearly impossible. Current Condition: We undertook this project to construct a new concrete drainage system and road for the residents, ensuring that they would no longer face issues during the rainy season while commuting from their homes to the main road. The total project cost was approximately 23 lakhs. We used robust materials, including 10mm and 12mm TATA steel rods and M30 design mix RMC concrete, to ensure the road's strength and durability. Our team consisted of engineers, managers, and both skilled and unskilled labourers who worked diligently to complete this project. #civilengineer #civil #construction #concrete #drainage
