The Bengaluru Climate Action Plan (BCAP) has maintained a strong momentum over the past few months, with city-wide discussion and coordination among stakeholders. More than 3.5 billion people are already exposed to major climate hazards such as heat, drought and flooding. For the most climate-vulnerable communities, this becomes a question of survival. That is to say, the ability to secure the food, water, housing and infrastructure we all need to live. The #RaceToResilience campaign and Sharm El Sheikh Adaptation Agenda are working to build this for the four billion people most affected by climate change. At #ClimateWeekNYC, the High-Level Champions convened partners to accelerate the implementation of the agenda and explored the long-term investment horizon. UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, COP27, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin said “localised climate action is crucial in the context of addressing adaptation and resilience gaps, including partnerships with mayors and city leaders. As we respond, we need to benefit from the regional expertise and the positive and negative lessons of the past.” Reena Gupta, Advisor to the Environment Minister of Delhi, strengthened this message saying that “the elephant in the room is climate finance, some should be grant funding but I don’t see enough flowing in”. Alongside yesterday morning's event, the City of Delhi announced it has joined the #RaceToResilience unveiling its plans for waste, clean energy, and nature for its 30 million inhabitants. The event was moderated by Emma Howard Boyd CBE and attended by Sheela Patel, both of which are our Global Ambassadors. Currently only 1-3% of private finance globally can be attributed to investing in adaptation solutions. To achieve both speed and scale here, the High-Level Champions are calling for the integration of adaptation and resilience into business and investment strategies. We need to “make every dollar work harder for the benefit of people” said Elizabeth Yee. Speaking on infrastructure specifically, we need to ensure that all development is climate resilience, and “now there is a valuation upside for that asset investment” closed Mahesh Roy.

Though there is a long way to go, this still feels like coming to a full circle, in a bigger circle of things with many smaller loops. This is a milestone indeed, since the time of kick-starting the preparation of BCAP in 2021 and the 2 year journey that ensued thereafter. Read this piece written by Praseeda Mukundan and me to know about a few lesser known facts about BCAP here https://lnkd.in/gwUMhHYU
We warmly congratulate Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on the launch of the Bengaluru Climate Action Cell webpage - https://lnkd.in/gkyK5NYZ. The site offers all updates on the Cell’s activities focused on driving forward the necessary coordination (and implementation) of the Bengaluru Climate Action and Resilience Plan. Indian cities are strategically navigating through urban development while facing a challenging climate scenario, escalated by #greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions, more frequent #climate disasters, and the impact of urban growth. Monitoring #climateactions is therefore necessary for building #resilience and #sustainable cities. In this context, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs have created #CSCAF, a self-assessment tool for cities to monitor their climate action. 👇Explore more about CSCAF in our Did You Know Series (#DYKSeries) Follow #DYKSeriesNIUA #NIUAProjectInsights for more updates.
