Dr. Jeni Miller, Executive Director of the Global Climate and Health Alliance asserts that cities are a critical place to be working to protect and improve people’s health. Getting off fossil fuels is key to building healthy cities. 🌱🏙️ “99% of the world’s population breathes air that doesn’t meet the World Health Organization guidelines. So in order for people to actually live healthy lives in cities, we need to move away from these toxic sources” That’s why a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is needed. #OurCommonFuture #ProtectWhatWeLove #FossilFuelTreaty

This week, the #EUEnvironmentAndHealth Conference – ‘Research Perspectives on the Health Impacts of Climate Change’ explored how scientific research and policy can effectively work together: ▶️ While we are lowering emissions – we still need to work to adapt and minimise the impacts of #ClimateChange ▶️ Air pollution and climate change are two sides of the same coin and can threaten our health in different ways – for example in places with higher temperatures, higher levels of pollution increases heat related respiratory deaths ▶️ Equity is needed for long-term solutions, and need to be developed through multilateral action #AirQuality #AirPollution

Expanding the Public Trust Doctrine to include clean air and climate change mitigation as environmental human rights is crucial and should be recognized globally, including by the United Nations. These rights address universal human needs, as clean air and a stable climate are essential for health and survival, while pollution and climate change pose serious health risks. Recognizing these rights helps ensure equity and justice by protecting vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by these issues. It also fosters global responsibility, encouraging collective action and legal frameworks to tackle transboundary environmental challenges. Additionally, this recognition supports sustainable development by linking environmental health to economic and social well-being, creating a legal and moral obligation for governments to act. It empowers individuals and communities to advocate for policy changes and hold governments accountable, and it emphasizes intergenerational responsibility to conserve resources for future generations. Overall, framing these issues as human rights would elevate their global importance, promote equitable solutions, and encourage a unified approach to one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time.
Most of us - 99% of humanity - breathe polluted air. Air pollution leads to an estimated 8 million premature deaths – including more than 700,000 children under five. Yet pollution is a silent killer that can be stopped. Investing in clean air saves lives, combats climate change, strengthens economies, builds fairer societies, and advances the #GlobalGoals. On International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, let’s invest now so we can breathe easy knowing we are securing a healthier planet for all. 📷: UN NY Headquarters, 2023 (UN Photo/Eskinder Debebe)

On today's #WorldHealthDay, we're looking at how integrating air pollution & health impacts into climate transparency frameworks helps fight climate change & protect public health. Discover how to practically achieve this using guidance developed by ICAT and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition. Benefits of Integration: ✅Development of comprehensive emission inventories: Track greenhouse gases, short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), and air pollutants using a consistent methodology. ✅Policy evaluation: Assess how policies and measures simultaneously impact air pollution and climate change. ✅Health benefits quantification: Quantify the health burdens associated with air pollution and the health benefits achieved through cleaner air. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e6ZTMXbb
