Why We Write: Ten Years at Writers Collective of Canada is out NOW! Our newest chapbook explores our Six Essential Practices that guide us – courage, affirmation, story, confidence, inclusivity, and deep listening This month, we're sharing the impact of STORY: a description, either true or imagined, of a connected series of events. In WCC writing workshops, each participant’s voice can flourish when protected by the assumption of fiction. One’s authentic voice is able to grow through the writing, sharing, and acknowledgement of character. Everyone has a story, and through writing together, we discover ourselves. In celebration of Why We Write, and 10 years of WCC, leave a comment below and tell us how you've witnessed or experienced the power of story in a WCC workshop! Attending events is an important task for authors and publishers, but so is the follow-up. One of our favorite aspects of having an IBPA membership is the member benefits we receive. Just this year, PTP Press invested in the IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) partnership program, where they displayed our inaugural title, The Price We Pay, at this year's annual American Library Association conference. We also purchased an ad in their ALA catalog. The cost included them giving us the contact information for every librarian who entered the IBPA's booth. Although no one can represent and pitch your book, products, and services better than you can, the deliverables we received from the IBPA alone were worth the investment. It's not just some random list we bought from some random spammer who landed in our inbox. These are real, live librarians who entered that booth and saw our book. Worth every penny paid, indeed. I help communications professionals honor their creative dreams, apply their skills to fiction, and finish their novels. Writer | Fiction Book Coach
Attention women’s fiction writers in WFWA… …did you read your newsletter yet today? I’m so excited to present on revision to this amazing community on October 30th! After a writer types “the end” on a rough draft, they often turn back to page one and start revising. The problem? Starting on page one leads to line edits that are a waste of time if a writer does them too early in the process. The first revision pass should be for identifying the big picture problems such as point of view, voice, character development, and story trajectory. In this webinar, I will teach writers how to adjust their mindsets from writer to reader and how to more effectively analyze their work to spot the structural problems for a more efficient revision pass. It’s going to be so much fun! I hope to see you there! Write women’s fiction but aren’t yet a member of WFWA yet? Join this fantastic community for support, resources, and amazing content like this webinar on revision and oh so much more! https://lnkd.in/e5Phyudf See you on the 30th! #revisionroadmap #revisioncoach #fictioncoach #bookcoach #writingcommunity #WFWA #womensfiction #writingsupport #writinghelp #writingtips

Is writing taking forever to finish? Get the job done with these three simple tips: 1. Schedule a regular time and place to write. Designate it as your special "writing time"- no interruption allowed! 2. Note where you left off before finishing your writing session. That way, you can set yourself up for success and pick up where you left off when you are ready to begin again. 3. Find a distraction-free environment and dedicate a weekend to your writing. You will be able to finish the first draft and make incredible progress with no editing time needed! In the most recent Latina Writing Comunidad ✨ session, I had the honor of witnessing Araceli E. 's workshop on how writing children's literature can be a powerful tool for healing your inner child and processing past experiences. Members shared their personal stories, fostering a sense of community and inspiration among Latina writers. When sharing writing in the LWC, we encourage everyone to give themselves some grace; it's okay if your 5 minute writing has errors in it or isn't "the best you could do". We practice allowing ourselves to show up exactly as we are: imperfect and well intentioned. Perfectionism is a tool of the oppressor. When we feel inadequate and ashamed, we keep to ourselves and block ourselves from making meaningful connections that can transform our lives. I decided to write about my experience as a tia. Here's what I wrote*: In Karina’s living room, there are books In Jane’s playground, there are giggles In Marybelle’s class, there is a helper In Patricias’s house, there are besitos She has babies, bebes del corazón 🫶🏼 I'm forever grateful to Araceli for providing this workshop. I'm currently working on connecting with publishers to land more Latine authors to be speakers in future sessions. Please make the connection if you have one! If you'd like to register for the group as a member and/or speaker, here is the registration link: https://lnkd.in/gHDsjHGd 🩷 Listen to my podcast for more content like this! https://lnkd.in/gsXAr54B https://lnkd.in/gRbjFiuk *to protect my nieces' privacy, I changed their names in my writing.

Thinking hard about what it means to choose an identity (or be given one), how the borders of that identity are drawn and what that means for a writing group. Looking forward to our panel presentation tomorrow at The 2024 Washington Writers Conference. Hope to see you there! https://lnkd.in/ee9nVtyg Finding Your Community: Identity-Based Writing Groups. What does it mean to join a group of writers with whom you have something very specific in common? Four authors will discuss how their identity-based groups support and amplify writers: Sarah Kain Gutowski from Pen Parentis (parent writers), Jee Leong Koh from Singapore Unbound, Chloe Yelena Miller from Italian American Writers Association, and E. Ethelbert Miller from Cave Canem (African American poets). They will discuss what it means to claim these identities and the possible challenges of labeling oneself.

Dragon-carving for Writers is a collaboration we ran here at Wind&Bones between six writers, two from the UK (Hannah and Will!) and four from China. Together, we explored the creative possibilities of the medieval Chinese text, the Wenxin diaolong (文心雕龍) by Liu Xie (劉勰). This project was funded by a Connections Through Cultures grant from the British Council. This project resulted in the production of the following varied texts: Sipei Lu (translated Yuhang Zhang) writes about curatorship and art practice in an era of censorship, and asks how we might continue to nourish our vital spirits. Ningli Deng’s poems (translated Ningli Deng, with Will Buckingham) pay exquisite attention to the smallest of details, exploring the patterning of the world and of human experience. Zhenhao Shi’s story (translated Poppy Toland) ranges from the Taiping rebellion to contemporary social media, to a small street stall selling beef offal. Yuhang Zheng (translated Yuhang Zhang) reimagines Liu through the lens of a fictional 19th century scholar, Boda Chen. Hannah Stevens (translated Ningi Deng) takes a line from Liu about pheasants in the garden of literature, and reinvents it as unsettling rural horror. Will Buckingham (translated Sipei Lu) reflects on writing, pattern and weaving, through a reinvention of the “eight-legged essay”, and a meditation on spiders. You can read each text in full via the website here: https://lnkd.in/eBQgYuF5 #writers #writing #storytelling #fiction #nonfiction #poetry #collaboration #English #Mandarin #workintranslation
