Lead a team of passionate PR professionals to deliver impactful work for brands that value PR | Former chair of the CIPR North West
Remember - an apprentice is for life*, not just for National Apprenticeship Week. *not life, but you know what I mean! There will be a lot of 'oh quick, it's #NationalApprenticeshipWeek - get some content out' this week. A quick social post because 'it's topical and everyone is talking about it' can: 👄 be seen as paying lip service to it ❌ be lost amongst the newsfeed with every other brand sharing content. Shouting about your apprentices all year round shows a genuine appreciation for the role they are playing in your company's success. That can only be a good thing for attracting future candidates! And don't forget to highlight: ⬆️ Those who started as an apprentice and are working their way up the career ladder 👥 Those who support with the training and development of the apprentices internally Check out Wynne Construction - C Wynne & Sons Ltd and Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK for examples of businesses that actively showcase their desire and passion to offer career opportunities. When you get that post out this week, make sure you pop in your content calendar when you will discuss apprentices and trainees again. #NAW2024 📸 Pic is of Wynne Construction apprentice Callum Jones and site manager Dylan Richards.

Today, meet Salutatorian Landon Doty of the WECA Utah Commercial Electrical Apprenticeship Class of 2024. He works for WECA Utah Founding Member Contractor Hunt Electric, Inc. "Having gone to other schools first, I can confidently say that I would love to have started from the beginning with WECA," says Landon. "We discussed some of the curriculum that my class didn't get to cover elsewhere, and some of the material that we did get to cover at WECA...I can only imagine how much better it would be to have gone through WECA sooner." "WECA is fun. Having many more labs than previous schools was a treat. WECA also gave me access to many concepts, products, and scenarios that I had never seen until it was required of me. I can now more confidently approach numerous uncommon tasks. I have spent many hours being moved around with tasks and learning new ways of approaching tasks. Learning to install is important, but having the chance to learn how to learn has been greatly beneficial," continues Landon. Congratulations, Landon! So true - skills need to match market needs. The green skills as add ons for existing tradespeople as well as attracting new people is critical and urgent.
Skills, skills, skills: we need a ready-to-work workforce! This is one of the key areas where the Mayoral role can have most influence, making sure that adult training is fit for purpose, inspiring school leavers to engage with what’s on offer, and making sure the trainee is properly prepared for the working environment. Without this in place, businesses and productivity will suffer, and young people won’t learn the skills needed for secure and rewarding employment. If I could pick up a blueprint for apprenticeship skills, this is where I would start: Graham Ratcliffe and his Construction Skills Village in Scarborough. This is what the working environment is really like, with skills taught by industry tradesmen on a year-round rolling programme. Enjoyed talking to Graham about the support needed to develop training in solar and heat pump technology - that I would deliver as Mayor - and the ways in which this model of training could be used in industries that are currently short-staffed due to lack of skills, such as chefs in hospitality. #skills #training #skillsforsuccess #learning #education #apprenticeships #constructiontraining #scarborough #tradeskills #workskills #workingskills #skillsforthefuture #skillsforjobs #solarpower #solartech #heatpump #yorkandnorthyorkshire #york #northyorkshire #yorkshire #felicity4mayor #felicitycunliffelister
