Unconscious bias is where people will make a judgment based on their own experiences or assumptions, without awareness they’re doing so. This can have profound impacts on those targeted by unconscious bias, affecting their confidence and causing them to feel ignored and judged for their race, appearance, gender or disability. People must be more aware of their actions towards those who are affected by unconscious bias, including challenging others when we notice biases arise. Only then will we be able to tackle unconscious bias head on, and improve environments for those faced with this issue daily. This can lead to a number of issues that have profound impacts on the people who are targeted by this unconscious bias, making them feel lesser, unappreciated, ignored and judged for their race, appearance, gender or disability. Exploring Individuality and Neurodiversity Through the Lens of Objectivism In a recent intellectual exchange, we delved into Ayn Rand's Objectivism and its potential views on the neurodiversity movement. Objectivism, with its core emphasis on individualism and rational self-interest, might offer a unique perspective on embracing cognitive differences. While Rand's work does not directly address neurodiversity, her advocacy for personal freedom and the pursuit of happiness aligns with the movement's goals. However, Objectivism's high regard for reason and productivity presents an interesting dialogue on how society values and integrates diverse cognitive abilities. This conversation raises pivotal questions: - How do we balance individual capabilities with societal standards of productivity? - Can a philosophy rooted in individualism accommodate the collective needs of those with hidden disabilities?
