It was great to hear last night from former Toronto mayor and C40 Cities Managing Director David Miller at the launch of his updated book Solved: How the World's Great Cities Are Fixing the Climate Crisis. Lots of great takeaways about how cities around the world are taking ambitious steps to be more sustainable, liveable, and frankly, more fun!
A couple of examples were highlighted. Shenzhen, China, a city of thirteen million people, has sixteen thousand buses, all of which are electric. The city’s greenhouse emissions are reduced by 1.35 million tons per year with this conversion to electric buses. (This while Toronto is ‘piloting’ the concept). In Paris, a comprehensive Pedestrian Paris Strategy included pedestrianizing the Left Bank of the Seine Quayside. In just three years six million walkers, runners and cyclists took advantage of the space.
Also discussed was the role of business in partnering with policymakers to create change, and the challenge of keeping the climate agenda a priority while so many economic and geopolitical issues surround us. Hint, peoples voices matter, collectively and individually, and engaging can have a measurable impact.
Lastly, David Miller noted in his book that “Polluting less not only helps in a small way to minimize our impact on the planet, it helps our pocketbook and our health, too – a win all the way around.”
