Have you ever been a mentor to someone? If you have, you know how inspiring it can be when you see them excelling years after your time with them.
An old lineman, Don Hardee, took me under his wing when I was working in California. We worked on a 500kV transmission line together. He involved me in meetings and took me out to the field to ask questions and learn. This allowed me to gain a better understanding of the work and what all is involved. I still talk to him to this day, and it’s one of those friendships that stick with you. He is semi-retired now, but the role he played in my career was instrumental.
It's truly heartwarming to see your mentees succeed in their careers. Reconnect with the individuals you collaborated with and achieved great things alongside. Discover what they're currently doing and take pride in knowing that you were there at the very start of their journey. It’s nice to catch up with people that you've done projects with and see what they're up to – especially when you were there at the beginning.
Now as a leader, I have the opportunity to talk to younger people about their careers at Kiewit and in the power delivery market. Don taught me about life and the power delivery market, and I hope to do the same for those who come after me. Kiewit’s core values are people and stewardship, which are two of the values that stand out the most to me. I chose to come to Kiewit because people matter here; It’s nice to work at a company that has these core values.

I was born and raised in a small town, always had a passion for science and technology. Encouraged by my parents, I excelled in my studies of engineering focused on physics and mathematics. Despite facing societal expectations and stereotypes about #genderequality roles, I persisted in pursuing my dream of becoming an engineer. Upon graduation, I faced challenges as one of the few women in my field. However, I remained resilient and secured a position at a leading renewable energy company.
Passion Turns into Advocacy:
I realized the importance of promoting renewable energy in my professional life and the wider community. I started engaging with local organizations as well as #ngo and community groups to raise awareness about the benefits of #clean energy.
Leadership in Action:
As I climbed the corporate ladder, I became a driving force behind the development of groundbreaking renewable energy projects. My leadership skills and commitment to sustainability led to the successful implementation of large-scale solar power initiatives, earning my industry accolades and awards.
Educational Advocacy:
Understanding the need for diversity in the #STEM fields, I founded a scholarship program to support young women pursuing engineering degrees. I became a mentor for aspiring engineers, particularly women, breaking down barriers and inspiring the next generation of innovators.
Global Impact:
My influence extended beyond my immediate community. I actively participated in international conferences, collaborating with experts and policymakers to advocate for renewable energy on a global scale.

As I look back on my fifteen years of renewable energy journey, I see not only personal achievements but a legacy of empowerment and positive change. My commitment to renewable energy and advocacy for women in engineering have left an indelible mark, inspiring others to follow in my footsteps and contribute to a sustainable and equitable future.

Across the world, Indigenous communities have long been incubators of sustainable systems. Pueblo and other Native architects developed ingenious multistory housing uniquely crafted for the deserts of North America.
Aboriginal communities in Australia perfected the ecologically enriching land management practice known as cultural burning.
These systems, like our land divisions, reflect a union of the local culture and environment, one that keeps the needs of a community and the planet in balance.
As we all strive to imagine the future, the inevitability of extractive capitalism should not be assumed. Rather, it’s important to think deeply about how to build an alternative reality—one where Indigenous perspectives on relationships to land, sea, sky, and cosmos are the guiding force.
We should all ask, What would our planet look like in Indigenous hands?
