Another #Olympics may be done and dusted....Tom Cruise has abseiled into the Stade de France (Sorry Tom you're not a patch on Queen Elizabeth parachuting but nice try!). But the spirit of competition and excellence is far from over. 28th August marks the start of the #Paralympic Games - highlighting the incredible abilities of #disabled athletes. I am am blown away by that fact that 24 athletes competing in this year's Paralympics have used Back Up's services at some point in their journey to #Paris! The Paralympics are not just a sports event; they are a global movement that challenges perceptions, breaks down barriers, and fosters inclusivity. These athletes train with the same intensity and determination as their Olympic counterparts, often facing additional hurdles both on and off the field. Supporting the Paralympics also means advocating for greater visibility and accessibility in all aspects of life. It’s an opportunity for businesses, communities, and individuals to commit to creating environments where everyone can thrive. As the Paralympic Games begin, let’s rally behind these incredible athletes, celebrate their victories, and ensure their stories are told with the same enthusiasm and respect that we have shown the Olympians. Ice Baths don’t win you Gold Medals! Resources matter, but they aren't everything. The latest gear and facilities can help, but in my journey to gold in 2008 and 2016, it was my mindset and my team that made the real difference. With the Olympics just ended and the Paralympics starting next week, it’s easy for athletes to compare their resources to others. The same applies in business—too often, we focus on things that aren't important. Keep it simple. Focus on what truly matters: your mindset, your team, and the process. The outcomes will follow. Re-Imagining Boundaries: Lessons from the Olympics With the Paris Olympics in full swing, it’s the perfect time to draw inspiration from sporting pioneers who re-imagined their sport. Daring to challenge conventional wisdom and set traditions, they redefined boundaries and blazed a trail of new heights. My favorite Olympic example is Dick Fosbury. An American high jumper who passed away last year, Fosbury is considered one of the most influential athletes in the history of track and field. He revolutionized the high jump event with a radical ‘back-first’ technique that became known as the ‘Fosbury flop’. Fosbury introduced his new technique to widespread skepticism at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, but soon captivated the world by winning the gold medal and setting a new world record.  His innovative approach soon became universally adopted as the new standard for the sport. With such inspiration, ponder this as you watch the Paris games: What could be the next Fosbury Flop innovation in your industry?  And how could you be the one to introduce it? Since 1960, the #Paralympic Games have challenged notions of Disability, and what began as a movement with just 400 Athletes, has grown to 4,400 across 22 sports. Outstanding performances from Paralympians like Natalie du Toit, the first amputee swimmer to compete in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Abdellatif Baka, a visually impaired runner who not only broke the 1500m T13 world record but ran it 1.71 seconds faster than the #Olympic gold medalist that same year, help prove to the world that firsts go beyond the podium. With the Paralympics drawing to a close, it's fascinating to note the contrasting success of top-performing nations. In the Olympics, USA & China led the medal charts (126/91) while Team GB secured an honorable 65 medals. In the ongoing Paralympics, China & Team GB are on track for a similar medal haul as the Olympics (87/54). However, the USA's current medal count is 42, just a third of their Olympic total. This raises questions about their focus and efforts in the Paralympics as a nation. At Anglia Research, we understand the importance of allocating efforts across all areas.
