21 U.S. States Commit to Modernizing Power Grid to Meet Challenges and Opportunities Twenty-one states across the United States have committed to prioritizing efforts to adopt modern grid solutions aimed at expanding grid capacity and building modern grid capabilities on both new and existing transmission and distribution lines. These states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawai‘i, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin. In a recent submission to EirGrid Group Tomorrow’s Energy Scenarios Consultation, our Policy Analyst Helen McHenry outlined that the lack of investment in transmission infrastructure in the west and northwest could continue to affect both Ireland’s and the Region’s opportunities for making the most of the abundant renewable resources in the Western Region in the drive for net zero by 2050. While the WDC complimented EirGrid on the scenario development and modelling, the process of the translation of the scenario models into grid development plans needs to be clearer. We are thrilled to spotlight Alabama A&M University’s Bulldog Transit System (BTS), which has been awarded an $8.1 million Competitive Low-No Emissions Program Federal Assistance grant for FY 2023. This funding will accelerate BTS’s journey to becoming a fully zero-emissions transit system by 2031. Since 2017, Alabama A&M has been transitioning towards renewable energy by phasing out fossil fuel buses. With this new grant, major upgrades will include expanding the solar power microgrid system to an impressive 2.5 megawatts, further solidifying AAMU’s leadership in sustainability and green business innovation. This achievement is not only a testament to Alabama A&M’s commitment to sustainability but also an incredible learning opportunity for HBCU business schools. The Environmental League of Massachusetts is proud to announce that we are joining Advanced Energy United, American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG), National Wildlife Federation, and NECEC on the new ‘Transmission Possible’ campaign, building support at the local, state, and federal levels for upgrading America’s energy transmission infrastructure.
