I’ve been in Admissions for a long time and I feel like I have heard more students ask “What is your acceptance rate?” this year than ever before. For those that have or work with college bound students acceptance rates do not really tell you anything meaningful about an institution. It may give you some idea of the likelihood you will be admitted but it doesn’t equate to the quality of education you will receive. Instead spend your time asking more substantial questions that will tell you if that institution is a good fit. What type of student thrives at your institution? What opportunities are there to complete research or internships in my chosen field? What support programs are available if I start struggling in my courses? What do I need to do to be considered for scholarships? Use your time at college fairs to ask things that you can’t easily find on the internet.

Virginia Tech ranked sixth among all U.S. public schools and first among all Virginia schools in the 2025 Wall Street Journal/College Pulse ranking of the U.S. Colleges released Thursday. Overall, Virginia Tech landed at No. 19 among all 500 universities included in the ranking that focuses on two key metrics: how much a school improves students’ chances of graduating and their future earnings and the overall student experience, according to The Wall Street Journal. Real-world experiences – such as internships, study abroad, and undergraduate research opportunities – are a hallmark of a Virginia Tech education across all its colleges, readying students for their careers and building the critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills they’ll need. Opportunities to connect and learn from a vast network of Hokie alumni around the globe support both students and graduates along the way. https://lnkd.in/eQct2Vah

According to the May 2024 Strada Education Foundation's Building Better Internships report: "financial challenges also impeded students from participating in internships. About one-third of 4-year internships were unpaid, and even paid internships sometimes require students to forgo wages or pay for additional transportation and/or housing." #students shouldn't miss out on critical #experientiallearning opportunities simply because their pay or stipend does not cover housing costs during the experience. Some universities now offer internship scholarships for students with unpaid or low-pay internships. But these resources are often limited and quickly dispensed. However, there are other resources including the HBCU National Center Housing Grant which provides 💎free housing💎 to #hbcu students who have secured an internship in the Washington, D.C. area. And applications are now open for Spring 2025 (January - May)! 🚨CORRECTION 🚨Full eligibility and application details below - application formally OPENS on October 15, 2024. Interest form link in comments. #internships | #fellowships October 8, 2024

As this UVA student notes, middle-class students are stuck between earning too much to qualify for grants and not earning enough to pay for college costs. https://buff.ly/4du7W5U Families can explore options to lower costs like earning credits in HS (AP, dual enrollment), community college pathways, co-ops & paid internships, private scholarships, and careful college selection.
