The 3 major areas of promotion the Space Generation Advisory Council espoused during Agenda Item 9 at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) 67th #COPUOS session I think are important for our destiny of multiplanetarism. In essence I consider these to be:
1. We should manage space debris to not cause harm to our future efforts.
2. We should establish rules to coordinate the movement of space objects to not cause harm to our future efforts.
3. How will we balance exploration, exploitation, and preservation of resources to not cause harm to our future efforts?
It was ideal that consensus could be reached at the 67th session but, reaching global consensus on how to explore, and/or exploit, and/or preserve the Moon, and other bodies, will likely require critically evaluating Humanity's purpose within the Universe as we know it at this time and in the future, and setting upon a Path that optimises for least harm to our future efforts or some other Path. For example, unless of course we choose to terraform an atmosphere on the Moon, the objects placed on the surface do not rust away in 100's of years, but will be obliterated by asteroid/metorite impacts or otherwise "atomically-sandblasted" away by radiation over many 1,000,000's of years. If not seriously considered and managed in someway, I think it is a near equivalent problem to Earth's orbital Space debris. So at least we'll have a case-study with a lessoned-learned register to look back on.
Last week, SGAC had the amazing opportunity to present at the 67th Annual Session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space! 🌌✨
SGAC prepared a statement for Agenda Item 9: "Space and Sustainable Development," which was delivered by Joshua Critchley-Marrows, SGAC Co-Chair.
We’re thrilled to share the highlights of our statement:
🌍 Spotlighting Space’s Impact: Space technologies play a vital role in achieving the SDGs, from monitoring climate change to managing disasters.
🌟 Introducing IPASS: We presented our Intergenerational Pact for Space Sustainability (IPASS), featuring key recommendations for a sustainable space future:
1️⃣ Preventing Space Debris: We advocate for robust national policies and international frameworks for effective debris management.
2️⃣ Space Traffic Management: We propose a global framework for space situational awareness and traffic coordination.
3️⃣ Principles for Space Resources: We call for the establishment of principles for the peaceful and cooperative use of space resources.
🌐 Promoting Youth Involvement: We emphasized the need for meaningful youth engagement in space governance and decision-making processes.
A huge thank you to our volunteers, partners, and supporters for your commitment to a sustainable future in space! 🚀🌟

1moA great event by WTS Orange County as always. Enjoyed hearing about Ernesto Chaves experience in Paris at the Olympics and Los Angeles Metro's plans for the LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games.
