Our final session for the Elevate Leadership program. It has been 5 full days over six months. Incredible 🎉 It has been so rewarding seeing the connection and growth across the emerging and new leadership team from the City of Playford council. I have loved having this on the first Wednesday of the month - hearing what they have applied since the last session. I think the bonus benefits is building genuine connecting across the council areas, and really understanding the business. Our Executive Team recently went through a strategic planning session with Nicole Dedeluk, PCC, MBA. We were eager to assess our team effectiveness and determine if we were "generative" or "disruptive". Thanks to a new instrument from Leadership Circle, recommended and administered by Vinay Kumar, PCC, we were able to get a score of 76 out of a hundred. That's a pretty good score! However, what's more important is that we now have specific insights on the behaviors we need to improve to become even better.

If you want to grow your role into leadership, one of the best ways to do this is to get others to do things for you! Whoo hoo! The harder thing to do is to trust others to do things for you. Then the harder thing again is to take accountability for others doing the work. If you cannot delegate and trust others then your ability to lead a team and leadership tenure is going to be short lived. You will get BURNED OUT! Sooo get delegating! Why do some leaders give their best to everyone but their own team? I’ve worked with leaders like this, and to be honest, it’s frustrating. They change whenever they're around peers or senior leaders, but with their own team, they’re a different person. It's almost like there are two versions of them: one that's engaged, patient, and positive when others are watching, and another that's uncaring and disengaged with their team. Why does this happen? I think it’s because these leaders are more concerned with how they’re perceived by senior leaders than they are with truly leading their team. They want to be noticed, promoted, and liked, but in doing so, they neglect the people they’re supposed to be leading. As leaders, we fail when we focus more on appearances than on being the best for our team. Our team's needs should always come first. Period. Getting promoted at the expense of effective leadership isn’t a win. Leadership isn’t about how we look; it’s about how we show up for our team every day. #theintrovertleader
