For the first 6 months of life, for the most part, breastmilk is all an infant needs. It’s one of the amazing evolutions of life. But till today, science has yet to make sense of all the magical things that breastmilk does. The myriad of molecules that make up breastmilk have yet to be truly decoded. What impact do they have on a child's development? How and why does the composition of breastmilk change over time? These little-understood areas are waiting to be explored by scientific minds. Even the act of feeding at the breast creates an intangible bond with the child. Evidence shows that this calming ritual just might benefit an infant's memory. We know that breastfeeding reduces the risks of child infections and is linked to better child cognition. For mothers, it reduces the risks for breast cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Despite all these benefits, many mothers struggle to breastfeed. It is so important that women educate themselves early on the demands of breastfeeding. If and when issues arise, knowing where to access reliable and timely information is critical (e.g., lactation consultants). At GloW, we want mothers to know they are not alone and together strive for the common goal of a happy and healthy mother and child. #humanlactation #lactation #internationalwomensday #womenshealth

Watch for this disease in pregnant patients, especially those who have had multiple pregnancies! Pemphigoid Gestationis (PG) typically presents as intensely itchy lesions, often starting on the abdomen and progressing to the trunk and arms and legs. Though the exact cause of PG is not fully understood, it's believed to be similar to other autoimmune responses like bullous pemphigoid. In these autoimmune responses, antigens of placental proteins trigger the production of anti-placental antibodies, which then cross-react with similar proteins in the membrane of the skin. This leads to the symptoms of PG. PG does carry some fetal and maternal risks, namely fetal growth restriction, preterm labor, and an increased risk of associated autoimmune diseases. It is vital to begin treatment on PG immediately upon diagnosis. To read more about Pemphigoid Gestationis in a JDPA article written by three PAs, visit JDPA's website for FREE access! 𝗦𝗼, 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀? 1) It is a Disease condition which literally means porosity in your bones. 2) This condition develops when there is a gradual bone resorption over bone absorption. Basically, it develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases or when the structure and tensile strength of the bone changes drastically making the person susceptible to fractures. 3) It is majorly observed in post-menopausal women due to the decrease in calcium absorption from the duodenum or small intestine as a result of lower secretion of estrogen by ovaries. 4) Osteoporosis is a condition affecting individuals of all ages and races, with risks escalating as one ages. While typically starting around menopause for women, men are also vulnerable, particularly as they grow older. Non-Hispanic white and Asian women face higher risks, followed by African American and Hispanic women, while non-Hispanic white men are more prone. Certain medications, like cancer treatments and glucocorticoid steroids, can elevate the risk. It's crucial for both men and women, regardless of background, to be aware of osteoporosis risks and seek preventive measures. Additionally, idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis can affect some children and teens, though most recover without treatment. The link between periodontal disease and systemic disorders like diabetes, CHD and in pregnancy has long been a focus of research. Many plausible explanations have been suggested but in my opinion inflammation that follows periodontal disease plays a pivotal role in the linkage. In my experience as a clinician and researcher, I can conclude that inflammatory periodontal disease may be a secondary risk factor in most of the systemic disorders mentioned in this article with periodontopathogens and host inflammatory mediators contributing to this risk.

🌟 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭! 🌟 Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, affecting more than half the people around the globe. It is especially prevalent among women with a history of diabetes, whether it be type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes. Therefore, it's crucial we identify early lifestyle factors for these women at risk to effectively shield their hearts. Breastfeeding is not only is a nurturing bond between a mother and her baby, but it is also championed by WHO and UNICEF as key to providing a baby's best start – recommended exclusively for the first 6 months and continuing on for 2 years. Unfortunately, over half of new moms globally fall short of meeting this mark. Echoing the topic of Human Lacation and Women’s Health, a campaign led by the Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW) to celebrate International Women’ Day, GloW is driven to initiate a conversation on supporting all moms to unlock the heart-healthy secrets of breastfeeding. Led by Prof. Cuilin Zhang MD, MPH, PhD, Director of GloW, alongside collaborators from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, their research has unveiled promising findings on breastfeeding and heart health. Analyzing data from 15,146 women with type 2 diabetes and 4,537 with a history of GDM across two significant studies — Nurses’ Health Study I & II — their research reveals a striking benefit: women who breastfed showed much lower rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In particular, those who breastfed for over 18 months saw a reduction in CVD risk by 32% for type 2 diabetes and 51% reduction for gestational diabetes. Notably, exclusive breastfeeding offered additional protection, underscoring breastfeeding as a powerful preventive measure against CVD in high-risk women. Please read the full paper on https://lnkd.in/gR_J_UDx to find out more on lactation and women’s heart health. #HeartHealth #BreastfeedingBenefits #WomenWellness #Lactation #CardiovascularDiasease

Due to personal preference or individual risk factors, some menopausal women are not receiving needed care. At this year’s #MenopauseSocietyMtg annual meeting, Bayer was pleased to be in attendance with a group of likeminded individuals and organizations. Key takeaways: I. AI has the potential to support women’s health in a range of areas, including perimenopause, #menopause, breast cancer, and much more. II. AI could help doctors provide the right care for women experiencing menopause. However, we need to be responsible with our use of AI and protecting patient data. III. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can support women with symptoms of menopause, such as vasomotor symptoms, sleep disturbance, or reduced libido. #MenoScienceNotSilence #MenopauseSocietyMtg #TeamBayer #HealthForAllHungerForNone

#InternationalWomensDay 🌍 Cardiovascular diseases pose a significant threat to women's health, yet, as highlighted by the Lancet Commission on women and cardiovascular diseases, gender-specific differences in cardiovascular health are often under-studied, under-diagnosed, and under-treated (Source: Vogel B. et al, 2021, Lancet). 💖 Nearly 45% of women over the age of 20 live with some form of cardiovascular disease. 🤰 Less than half of pregnant women in the USA have optimal cardiovascular health. 👵 Women experience unique life stages, such as pregnancy and menopause, that increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. ❤️ Proper prevention and adopting healthy lifestyles help reduce cardiovascular risk. 🗓️ Want to stay updated on our activities?
