This month, Supervisor Catherine Stefani visited the City College of San Francisco to tour the campus’ Student Success Center jobsite, an incredible facility taking shape on the college’s Ocean Campus. The project is using a progressive design-build project delivery method, which involves close collaboration between the owner and design-build team to help ensure the project is delivered on time, meets the budget, and meets the owner’s expectations. A huge thank you to Associated General Contractors of America and Kitchell for coordinating this insightful tour with our District 2 Supervisor! #BuildToImproveLives #Education

The construction industry faces a critical challenge: a shortage of skilled workers. According to a 2022 survey by Stanley Black & Decker, less than half of high school students have even considered pursuing a career in the skilled trades. Many young individuals remain unaware of the earning potential and opportunities within this field. DESTINI Estimator user Jaynes Corporation actively engages with the ACE Leadership High School, and we celebrate their dedication! 🌟 ACE Leadership High School, founded in 2010 through a partnership with the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), aims to bridge this gap. Jaynes Corporation actively participates on the school board and collaborates with educators to shape the learning experiences of over 200 students annually. 📚 Learning By Doing: ACE Leadership High School offers a project-based curriculum that combines applied skills with foundational subjects. Students learn math, science, communication, and history through practical, hands-on projects. This approach caters to those who may struggle with traditional education methods. 🌆 Night Classes for All Ages: Older students, up to age 22, can attend night classes to complete their diplomas and gain job skills. The curriculum was designed collaboratively with AGC, labor unions, and industry professionals, ensuring alignment with workforce needs. 👷♀️ First-Hand Exposure: Students explore various construction roles and gain real-world experience through shadowing and internships. Even if they don’t pursue construction careers, this exposure keeps trade skills visible and relevant. https://hubs.li/Q02Kz0WT0 #Construction #Education #SkillsGap

There’s a shortage of skilled labor in the construction industry, but Construction Ready’s Zach Fields knows exactly where to find individuals who can fill those jobs in the coming months and years. “The next generation,” Zach says, “is sitting in K-12 classrooms all over our country.” He adds that “we can help so many of them by introducing them to these skills and giving them a chance to decide for themselves what path to success they wish to take.” Zach helped do just that in the past schoolyear at Roswell High School, and he recently shared about the experience with Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine. See the article below for more on how Construction Ready is helping students “clearly see the career path connections they can build while still in school.” #constructionready #constructionindustry #skilledtrades #careers #constructioncareers #constructioneducation #handsonlearning Georgia Department of Education

Delighted to share our latest exciting experiential learning project with The Careers & Enterprise Company for school students, introducing - Springville. A big shout out to Springpod and the team at The Careers & Enterprise Company for bringing their shared vision to life so young people can explore the world of work. #virtualworkexperience #careerpathways #experientiallearning #futurecareers #careerjourneys #careersadvice
Welcome to Springville 🏘️🏫 As part of our partnership with The Careers & Enterprise Company we're introducing year 7 & 8 students to experiences of the workplace through Springville - an engaging town-style platform where the class (led by their teacher) can jump between different buildings to find out more about the careers and pathways in different sectors. How will it work? 🛫 In the Airport, for example, they'll find out about careers such as an Aerospace Engineer and an Ecologist and hear directly from some of our Career Experts sharing their experiences. ✏️ The teacher will find a fully resourced lesson with engaging activities, many of which link directly to a scenario or task that might be carried out in the workplace. There's also a hospital, an arts centre, tech office, leisure centre and more, and behind every building is an exciting careers lesson ready to inspire students and support teachers. And that's not all... ℹ️ In addition, we also have a live webinar series - hosted in the Speakers' Corner - where students can ask questions to our Career Experts. These webinars will be taking place on Wednesdays during May and June at various times throughout the school day. If you'd like to know more please email jo.bishop@springpod.com 💡 Fostering maximum engagement requires exciting content and an exploratory user journey, especially for younger students who are just starting to think about careers and compare their future options. For year 9s and above we're providing Virtual #WorkExperience with employers for students to engage with as they are typically further along their career research journey and looking to complete programmes that will provide extra detail to the #careers they are interested in. ⬇️ Springville is live now, check it out below ⬇️ https://hubs.la/Q02smSmM0

Placement #30 of 2024 This placement was for an Engineering Manager in Wisconsin. This client, like many in Wisconsin, overwhelmingly prefers candidates who are from Wisconsin, or at least from the upper Midwest, where candidates are used to long winters and significant snow. They’ve had many past relocations from warm weather areas that didn’t work out. Many people from warmer areas don’t realize how long winter can be and how that can affect one’s mental state if you are not used to it. The position required leadership, heavy equipment, design and a BSME. This candidate was extremely experienced, local and checked every box skill-wise. He interviewed well, got an offer and quickly accepted. Start to finish it was about a month and half. Lately the difficult point in placements occurs at the offer stage. So many deals are not moving forward there. Clients are putting out lower offers, as they feel they can at this point. Candidates are quickly rejecting them. When they are rejecting them, they are often not even mentioning counter offers, as they would often do in 2022 and early 2023. They are just quickly rejecting them. Thankfully that didn’t happen here. The offer was fairly solid and things went smoothly.

By participating in a Workforce Solutions and RGV LEAD, Inc. Teacher Externship initiative, The McAllen EDC is participating in a proactive approach to bridge the gap between education and workforce needs in the Rio Grande Valley. By hosting educator externs this week and involving them in company visits, we are providing firsthand insights into employer expectations and the specific skills required in today's job market. This initiative not only enhances the educators' understanding but also aims to integrate these insights into lesson plans focused on soft skills. Soft skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability are crucial for preparing students to succeed in their future careers. By incorporating these lessons into the curriculum, we are hopeful that our combined efforts will play a pivotal role in shaping a more prepared and competitive workforce for the region. This kind of initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and industry stakeholders to ensure that students are equipped with the skills necessary to meet the evolving demands of the job market. Thank you, Workforce Solutions, and RGV LEAD, Inc. for coordinating this effort here in the Rio Grande Valley. #education #mcallen #Mcallenedc #econdev #manufacture #softwaredevelopment #communication #teamwork #wfs #externs #workforcedevelopment

PAID internships beginning with high school juniors and seniors and through college need to become the norm and not the exception. Opportunities for on the job learning need to be accessible and achievable for all students regardless of their zip code and include the necessary student success supports. More regions need to bring coalitions of major employer partners together to co-invest and co-create business-led talent pipeline solutions - here are a few examples: Greater Washington Partnership New York Jobs CEO Council CEO Leadership Alliance Orange County (CLAOC) P33 Chicago and there are many more out there; Milwaukee, Houston, Minneapolis, and Indiana come to mind. I need to phone my LinkedIn network on this one because I can't get these stats to square. If 75% of new jobs require a college degree, while only 40% of applicants have one, then why on earth are 52% of recent college graduates underemployed? New report out today from Burning Glass Institute and Strada Education Network showing 52% of college grads are underemployed a year after graduation and - even more damningly - 45% remain so a DECADE after graduation. As long as the world is self organizing, the people in it must be able to self organize too. If someone had a degree in farriery, if there was such a thing, and the automobile industry replaced horses at light speeds, thus, the similarities between the two different times, now v then, employers want to know, do you have any improvisation left in you, or was it diminished in your time being educated? The biggest opportunity today is your ability to adapt to the evolving environment. Can you walk into an organization and heal that which the environment is struggling with? Is your life about you or is your life about the lives of everyone that you touch? Is there a degree in empathy, courage, acknowledgement, curiosity, thinking imaginatively, and improvisation? The greatest need will be in the field of awareness and transformation and how to deal with the challenges presented by the status quo, where 99.99999999% of the people believe that the status quo is out there, some where, not knowing that the status quo is within the gap between the brain and consciousness! The gap is the time interval between sensory input, cognitive processing, and conscious reasoning and response. If your RDLPFC is compromised, then you’re stuck!
