Since January 1st, lightning-ignited wildfires have scorched more than 2.1 million acres of land across the US. 🌩 Dry lightning — strikes from storms with little to no rain — poses a serious risk by sparking fires in drought-stricken areas. Yesterday in Golden, Colorado, a dry cloud-to-ground lightning flash (shown below) struck a ridge, starting a wildfire that has now burned over 200 acres. Vaisala’s lightning data provides crucial information on the location, strength, and timing of these strikes, helping to pinpoint wildfire ignition points.

We still have a couple of weeks of warm, dry weather in most of California and southern/eastern Oregon and Washington, the southwest, and parts of Montana and Wyoming. This means that wildfire susceptibility (potential to burn if there is an ignition) will continue to be medium-to-high in many parts of the western US. At the same time, lightning power density continues to decrease across much of this region, so the overlap between lightning power and wildfire susceptibility will be quite limited. So, as we get into Fall weather, what we need to watch out for is not lightning-caused wildfires but the ones ignited by human activity. Our weekly firecast is available now for the next two weeks, forecasting wildfire susceptibility (potential fire size if ignited) and lightning-induced fire risk for ignition locations across the 11 western states. The video clip shows how the susceptibility varies from August 4 to August 18. ➡ Wildfire susceptibility increases over the next 2 weeks across New Mexico and Arizona (esp. southern parts), southern/eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, southern Idaho, northern Nevada/Utah, and parts of Montana. ➡ In California, wildfire susceptibility decreases near the coast and shifts more inland. Areas near Los Angeles continue to be susceptible (medium/high) to wildfires. 🌪️ Important Notice 🌪️ We believe a tornado recently passed just east of our location, resulting in significant damage to the power lines. Fortunately, our shop has not sustained any damage; however, it appears that it will be a few days before power is restored. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. We will resume operations as soon as power is restored. Stay safe. #TornadoAlert #PowerOutage #CommunitySupport #SafetyFirst #WeatherUpdate

New Post: Watch: Huge fires blaze along Miami highway - https://lnkd.in/gv-4UkpV Heavy smoke and flames lick the sides of a Miami highway with brush fires burning there for several days now. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) say roads have been closed and traffic rerouted. There have been no casualties or injuries reported as the fires raged over more than 150 acres of land. Wildfires in the state of Florida aren't unusual, says our weather team, but do tend to be smaller and more localised than those in other parts of the US. Temperatures are currently well above average for this time of year in Florida with dry conditions. It is also fairly breezy making conditions conducive to wildfires. Weather doesn't start fires but it can help them burn and spread. #Watch #Huge #fires #blaze #Miami #highway
